In the fall of 2012, Mateo was diagnosed with juvenile dermatomyositis, which in short makes him more susceptible to illnesses. Although his body has gone though a lot this past year, no one could have imagined what was to come. On April 5th, Mateo was admitted to Mercy's PICU and was diagnosed with pneumonia. Not only has he been fighting pneumonia, the coughing attacks that he has been experiencing the last few months have caused a Pneumothorax (lung leak). The air leaking into his body has caused his body to swell and his oxygen to dip. After multiple tests, i.e. CT Scans, chest X-rays, blood work, etc., his body was in over-drive and working far too hard for a 2 year old. On April 26th, Mateo was intubated, placed on a ventilator, and transferred to the PICU at Children's Hospital.
Mateo has been an incredible fighter, but he finally needed a break and now the machines are doing the work for him. They continue to run test after test to see what is going on internally as it is apparent his lungs are not in the best condition, and he may have ILD (Interstitial Lung Disease). There is no better place for him to be than Children's Hospital. We know he is getting the best care possible with the superior staff we have all heard so much about. With only one week in, we have already seen a difference.
Brooke and Matt, as most of you know, are truly angels from God and have faced this head on. Their strength and courage is admirable, to say the least, and an inspiration to all of us.
Now I believe it is our time to help them as best we can. Brooke and Matt have both taken Family Medical Leave (FMLA) from their careers to focus on Mateo and their 4 year old daughter, Brookelyn. We, as their friends and family, would like to do anything we can to help keep their focus strictly on the health and well being of their family and nothing else.
This is going to be a long journey and we want to thank you for all of your help and continuous prayers for our beautiful Mateo Meyer Daley.
