Hi. My name is Kelly and Colleen is my twin sister and best friend! She has very recently been diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 35. She and her husband Brad have 2 amazing daughters...Olivia(9) and Natalie(6). This news has come as a devastating shock to our whole family. Colleen has had a very difficult time coping with this diagnosis and the consequences it holds for her and her family.
We thank God that she found this at an early stage but nonetheless the treatment for it will be long and taxing.
Colleen has been a nurse for 13 years with most of her career spent at Providence Hospital. She recently took a leap of faith and left her Providence family for a new career opportunity at the University of Michigan health system. Unfortunately she has not worked for U of M long enough to receive any type of paid leave or disability. Her family will be going from 2 incomes to 1 with no warning or plan in place. They very much rely on her income to make ends meet! This loss of income will be a tremendous financial burden on their family. Due to her profession her doctors have advised her not to work during the course of her chemo treatments. She will be at a high risk for infection on top of dealing with various side effects. After close to 5 months of chemo she will then need surgery followed by aproximately 6 weeks of recovery.
Colleen should not have to worry about money during a time like this. I would love nothing more than to be able to give her the comfort of knowing that as she fights this battle her family will not suffer.
