Prepare Big Camp for Winter

As many of you know, Native American activists and environmentalists from the Americas and beyond have been gathering in Standing Rock, ND since April to oppose the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). The Pipeline, which would run 1,172 miles and carry over half a million barrels of crude oil a day from the Bakken Oil Fields in North Dakota to refineries in Illinois, is slated to be built beneath the Missouri River, a critical water source for millions of people. Additionally, the pipeline would run through treaty lands and threaten important Native American sites and sacred burial grounds. The construction of the pipeline perpetuates the legacy of exploitation and intimidation that has created vast imbalances in this country, including the land and it's first nations.
In an unprecedented show of unity, dozens of tribes and allies have come together at Standing Rock in one of the greatest mobilizations of Native American activism in centuries. The encampment is now one of the largest “cities” in North Dakota and takes a lot of work and service to keep going. As winter approaches, the infrastructure of the camp will need to be reconfigured to respond to the plummeting temperatures.
We have a small team who have come together with the mission to provide support from our communities here along the West Coast and beyond.
We range from natural builders, to chefs to people in the healing arts - so our gifts are diversified and will have a variety of ways in which we can show up in solidarity and support. We are doing our best to be sensitive, and will show up as active listeners so that we can truly be in service to this movement.
In an expression of solidarity with the water protectors of the Standing Rock Sioux reservation and allies from around the world, and with the permission of the Native leadership at Standing Rock, we are putting preparations into effect to make the following offerings:
*Our brothers and sisters at Standing Rock are currently using bottled water since there is no existing system in place to obtain water directly from the land. We have a plan to help eliminate the use of bottled water and the plastic waste that it generates by creating a system that will allow the Standing Rock activists to draw water from the Cannonball River and run it through a filtration device that will provide potable water for drinking, washing, and cooking.
*Through the construction of composting toilets, we hope to be able to reduce the use of port-a-potties and replace them with a more sustainable alternative, which will not only help reduce costs and reduce fuel, but will also help contribute to the camp’s ability to be self-reliant.
*Finally, we are gathering the materials and resources to construct straw-bale structures for the camp’s winter residents to stay in throughout the cold, winter months. As experienced carpenters and natural builders, we will bring the skills and tools necessary to construct well-insulated structures for housing and kitchen use.
We need your help!
We are calling upon our community to get involved and ally with this incredible display of activism and unity. We believe that there are many people who want to support the community that is bravely weathering the oppression from the corporation, Energy Transfer Partners and their affiliates, who have big money interest in ensuring the Pipeline becomes a reality. Our team wants to be a supporting force in this massive movement that is transpiring at this very moment - and you can too!
Though not all of us are able to actually go to Standing Rock, you can show your solidarity by donating to our GoFundMe Campaign. Any amount that you can give will help! After looking at projected costs for this endeavor, it is clear that we need to raise at least $11,000 by October 10th, the day our team begins driving towards Standing Rock. We will be personally withdrawing these funds to apply to our three projects.
Raising this money is essential because we will have to purchase necessary materials to get the job done, such as a 5,000 gallon water tank, a solar system to pump water and charge tools, hundreds of straw bales, canvas cloths, wood, etc, as well as the transportation of many of these materials. We will be gathering as much as we can from ND regional sources to save on costs and gasoline use.
We are asking that you please help spread the word! We want to reach as many people as possible so that we can raise the funds necessary to move forward, and get construction started ASAP before the cold and snow settle in for the winter. We are planning for the weather to be quite cold upon our entrance there in mid-October (50's-20's) but it will be below Zero by mid-November. These shelters are needed to ensure longevity and sustainability of the water protectors at these camps.
