Red Door School for Autism
www.thereddoorschool.comDepartment of Education : Roll No. 20381D
The Red Door is a special school for children with autism and complex needs, in Dublin, Ireland. It is a small school with only 12 children who have autism and moderate learning difficulties.
Autism is a lifelong developmental disorder which impairs a child’s natural instinct to communicate, form relationships and learn. Children with moderate to severe autism really require 1:1 attention for the whole day, and the children in the Red Door benefit from having dedicated, experienced tutors working 1:1 with each child, teching them a mix of speech and vocabulary, reading, handwriting, motor skills, social skills, behavioural skills and life skills.
The Red Door uses Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), Picture Exchange, Sign Language and Speech & Language Therapy and Sensory Integration and PE to help pupils communicate their needs and feelings and deal with their need for sensory input. This helps them to be open for learning and play. All the pupils are making remarkable progress in their development. Our parent support group meetings help parents augment this progress at home with behavioural issues and dietary problems, amongst others.
State funding from the Department of Education only goes part of the way towards meeting the full costs of running The Red Door School. It really just covers the basics. We need to raise our own funds every year to help us provide the existing levels education and therapies for the children and to keep the school warm, clean and in good condition.
This year though, we are seriously in need of an injection in funding. We desperately need new resources immediately for the tutors to be able to work 1:1 properly with the children, we cannot afford the new resources required, or the special furniture we badly need, and even the therapies that we need on a daily basis. We also badly need to have improvements made to the school in order to move forward and to be viable.
I know there are lots of charities out there asking for money, but we would appreciate even a very small donation, every penny adds up and will go a long way for us. Every penny gratefully received will be put to very good use. Could we please share with your friends to help us reach our target. Many thanks!!
Pat Corry, my brother, will run the 2016 SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon in aid of The Red Door school. The marathon is on Sunday 30th October at 8am. Pat's race number is 21656. Pat is looking for as many people as possible to donate any amount, however small, for sponsorship, all proceeds go diectly into the school bank account.
