May 17th, 2013 was the day that young Riley William Heasley was diagnosed with PKAN, an extremely rare neurodegenerative disorder caused by excessive iron build up in the brain. It was also the day that his family was forced to come to grips with the many challenges associated with the battle to save their son. A disease that affects less than 200,000 people in the United States brings about its own unique challenges as well. Where can Riley get the care he needs? How can a single mother provide the proper care, and still work?

This is where Martyred Angels Foundation entered the picture. As CEO John Vogels recently told the family, “no one should have to go through something like this alone.” Having lost his young son Bladyn to a tragic drowning, Vogels knows the importance of helping others through difficult times. Please help support the Heasley family in their time of need. Donations will directly support the expenses associated with traveling to Oakland, California as part of the new 18 month FDA study of this rare disease. Martyred Angels Foundation is also seeking a cure for this horribly debilitating disease. Please help this family get through this battle for survival.

Riley has been released from Children's Hospital but still has a long road to ride mentally, physically and funding. We are waiting for him to adjust from the long hospital stay before his trip to California (Thank You Angels Flight) to see his specialist. He is 7 years old but has the ways of an infant. He does, however, have some memory that will make you laugh in absolute happiness! He absolutely LOVES THIS BOOK (watch video URL posted above)!! Lol thank you Nick Johnson. :) He's having a good day so far. :) nothing planned for today. Kind of just watching him and making sure his feeds are being tolerated before taking out his epidural and starting him on oral pain meds. Baby steps right now. But, baby steps in the right direction, is a thousand times better than the alternative. :) I love this little boy!!!

He's having more dystonic movements today and appears to be having sight issues. PKAN causes blindness, but wasn't ready for it to happen so quickly. We will know more about that tomorrow. They're going to do more tests. He looked like he was in pain a second ago, so they gave him Valium to help ease it a little bit. The more he wakes up, the more and more I see that the medically induced coma really didn't have all the good outcomes that we hoped for. He's not nearly as bad as he was when we got here.... But he's definitely not much better either.

The last procedure used on Riley wasn't effective. His brain wouldn't shut down and take a much needed rest to reboot his system. The family has been approved by the FDA to use an experimental drug that has been designed and produced for this very thing. Oakland,CA specialists really want him out there to get the best care needed for PKAN from a staff that's more experienced and educated in this area. Riley would need to be flown out to this facility but once there would have the best known care and staff for his PKAN Disease than anywhere else. Please give with all of your heart to help us raise enough funds to send this beautiful little 7 year old boy into the hands that he needs to be in. Riley has been on more pain meds and sedation than one can only imagine. This poor little man doesn't even have the chance to enjoy these beautiful days with his family and make memories. We are in the process of talking with a couple of organizations that fly children to specialized hospitals for better treatment from a staff that knows how to approach these difficult diseases and help these children lead a fun filled life as they should. Once again please give all that you can for Riley! Riley wants to play with his brother, mother, grandma's and family again. Let's help make this wish come true for Riley.

This was Riley before the breathing tube was put in and he was put into a medically induced coma. His health took a turn for the worse last week so he was rushed to Children's Hospital. He stopped responding to the other medications, so they had to take more drastic measures. The procedure used didn't work so Riley and Erin (Mother) are working on getting him transferred to Oakland to see a specialist. With the cost of this recent treatment, the flight to Oakland and the fact that Erin hasn't been able to work because of her constant care and love for Riley, they need your contributions now. Breaks our heart to see this sweet innocent little boy like this. Riley and his family need your support now more than ever before! Please give anything you can to help Riley battle his fight with PKAN Disease! It's impossible to feel the pain that this little boy is going through but your contribution would go along ways for his medical costs, treatment and research into this horrible disease. Pay It Forward For Riley!

it’s been a while since I’ve updated on this page to be honest I had forgotten about it. We have been so busy promoting donations to the Spoonbill Foundation I had forgotten about Riley’s gofundme page. I’m sharing this for those that want to use American Express to donate to Spoonbill. Facebook fundraisers don’t accept American Express so if you’d like to donate here we will make sure your donation gets to Spoonbill. This is just another option for donating for research to help us save the lives of Riley and his fellow PKAN WARRIORS. Thank You everyone for your support.
