Sloane's brain tumor recovery fund

Many of you know that Sloane's been sick for the past few years; throughout this time, she has seen over 15 different specialists from the Mayo Clinic to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. This month, we were finally given an answer. Sloane was diagnosed with a brain tumor on the pituitary gland, a condition known as Cushing’s Disease. This is a benign tumor that releases hormones from the pituitary gland, causing cortisol levels to be much higher than normal. This, in turn, causes a myriad of medical symptoms to occur. 

Sloane is scheduled to have neurosurgery on October 9 and will need at least a month to recover. Beyond this, it could take up to a year for hormone levels to become rebalanced. Recovery from this type of surgery is unpredictable. 

Sloane is still enrolled full-time at the University of Pittsburgh (studying neuroscience), and Pitt's disability services office is making accommodations to her schedule this semester. However, Sloane has had to take a leave from her job as a medical research associate, which was supporting her rent and monthly expenses. She hasn't been able to work since May as her symptoms worsened, and we’re not certain when she’ll be able to return to her job after surgery.

We are lucky to have insurance, but this covers only part of Sloane’s care - beyond brain surgery, Sloane’s medical expenses also include insulin (at times, this costs more than her monthly rent) and other diabetes supplies. 

People have been asking how they can help, so we've started this GoFundMe campaign to build a "recovery fund" for Sloane. The money will be used to help with medical bills, prescriptions, rent, utilities, and other expenses (like transportation to and from doctor appointments, etc.).
