In 2011 Ashley was diagnosed with Systemic Mastocytosis. This disease is extremely rare, so there isn’t any awareness about it in the community. Mastocytosis is caused by too many mast cells in the blood stream, which over produce histamine. Ashley has an extremely high amount of histamine being released constantly, which has caused numerous life threatening allergic reactions over the years. Many other symptoms and allergic reactions to anything and everything occur daily as well. Over the years her symptoms got worse and worse – however not much was done for her.
She has not been able to tolerate eating for years due to becoming allergic to nearly everything. Her diet eventually became so restricted that she was down to only 4 foods. The damage this disease has caused to her immune system/GI system has caused her to develop another rare, life changing chronic illness called Gastroparesis. It is defined as paralysis of the stomach. She was diagnosed last month and the tests showed that her stomach only functions at about 20%.
Gastroparesis makes eating and drinking unbearable, with pain, nausea, vomiting, etc. She has been on IV fluids daily for 3 months because this has left Ashley unable to eat and drink anything properly. There is no cure or any treatmeants that will work for her due to the severity of her condition. As a result, she is currently facing a life changing experience - placement of a GJ feeding tube in order to get the proper nutrients to survive.
Due to her decline in health, Ashley has not been able to work since April 2016 and it is unclear as to when she will be strong enough to work again. She has recently been approved for a medication that may help the Mastocytosis and calm the allergic reactions. This medication is extremely expensive and is not covered by insurance plans due to the disease being so rare. Epi pens, feeding pump and all other medical suppies are also not covered. Missed time from work from her family members, gas spent on appointments to London, Windsor, etc become very costly over time. On average, her medical costs will be over $1000 per month – and this is just the bare necessities to keep her alive.
