Mike's Guardian Angel Project

Donation protected
Mike Davis has a mission. Every day, despite chronic illness and disability, he spends his time helping others in need. He visits homeless men and women in Alexandria, VA, finding them wherever they are and checking on their basic needs for food, shelter and medical care. He checks in on people sleeping on benches and sidewalks, in tents, and in substandard housing; hanging out in the library; standing in food lines. When the local paper reports that a nameless, homeless person has been found dead, Mike says, "I knew him." He wants to do more to help and to bring together members of the community to help support this work. Mike delivers food, coats, blankets, tents and medical supplies to people in need, soliciting donations from churches and individuals, purchasing supplies himself with his limited income, and writing letters to farflung companies requesting donations which he has received from as far away as Minnesota.

Mike has an important background for the work he does. He was formerly homeless himself and has lived on the streets in Alexandria and in cities throughout the country including Los Angeles, Boise, Dallas, Santa Monica, Portland, and Atlantic City. He now makes his home in Alexandria, VA where he was born and raised on the 900 block of Duke Street. He is a member of Commonwealth Baptist Church in Alexandria, a member of the church's Social Justice Committee and will be a Deacon on May 5th.

Mike is disabled with diabetes, chronic heart and lung disease and other ailments which make it difficult for him to work for long stretches of time, but as he'd like to be working we are also using this page to say that he is available for skilled furniture refinishing (especially removing layers of stain and paint off antiques) and for lawn work, raking, sweeping, and trash pickup. He can be reached for work at 571-215-6272.

But in many ways Mike has a regular (if currently unpaid) job. He is busy everyday visiting those to whom he is a guardian angel and advocating on their behalf with City agencies, churches, businesses and individuals. He says he can hardly walk to Market Square without being bombarded by people who know him and need his help.

Therefore, as we sit in his rental home waiting for his rent assistance check, we are asking for the following:

Money to help Mike pay his rent, utility and food bills.

Money to pay for food (such as ready-to-eat military meals & grocery gift cards), blankets, clothes, tents and medical supplies (such as diabetes glucose monitors) to give out to those in need.

Combatting homelessness is a cause we all know about, but we don't always know how to help. Mike has an ideal awareness of the issues, can visit tent communities and other venues, and can make sure the funds collected are meeting true needs.

Thank you for your generosity!

In exchange, we will continue to post about Mike's life and work to help others better understand the needs of homeless persons all around us. We will also provide reports on exactly how the funds collected are used. Please feel free to ask questions.

As Mike does not have a 501 (c) 3 designation for his charity work, your contributions are not tax deductible, but are still much appreciated
