Saving HOPE

My name is Hope, and I sure do live up to my name.

I am a 2015 APHA buckskin filly, and I have recently gotten myself into some big trouble… You see, my owner’s name is Dawson- he is only 16 years old and fully supports me all on his own.  He works very hard to afford me. His dedication to his horses stems from his passion for us. While most kids his age spend time with their friends, he's usually found working- waking up super early before school, and racing home after school and weekends to work at his neighbour’s farm, the local tack store, and other odd jobs. All so he can have me :)

About 8 weeks ago, he came home from work to find my leg cut open pretty bad (oops, those fences really get in the way!) And when I say cut open…I mean REALLY cut open, the vets said that about 70% of the diameter of my leg was down to the bare bone, my extensor tendon was completely severed and unfortunately impossible to reconnect. I was rushed over to Atlantic Veterinary College where they put a splint on my leg and was monitored very closely by some nice doctors…I figured I might as well get comfortable, I’d be here a while.

After a variety of different tests and radiographs, the Vets thankfully determined that my joints and canon bone weren’t affected by my accident, although, the bone was exposed so there was a possibility the surface of the bone could die. But I’m a fighter (and pretty darn lucky)!! At 2 weeks post-injury, the Vets did an ultrasound on my flexor tendon which showed no signs of lesions. I was such a good girl that the AVC Vets sent me home to my family with a large bandage and splint after 4 weeks, Dawson was pretty happy to have me back.

Over the next few weeks things were looking up! Dawson took the best care of me, with daily bandage changes and weekly Vet visits, but I could tell he wasn't himself. He is very worried and really stressed, I think the costs of my medical care is weighing on his shoulders.

I am pretty resilient though, about 2 weeks ago the Vets decided that I was healing so well that I could go without a splint after removing some proud flesh. Finally! My leg was healing very nicely and I was even told I could still be a sport horse for him!

All of this time inside the stall was making me a bit antsy though, and I just needed to let some energy out one night! Once again…I got myself into some trouble. I had broken my bandage and busted my wound right back open again. They had emergency Vets out to look at me who put another splint on, which I then broke the following day with my energy bursts (oops). I really did a number on myself. So once again I was sent back to AVC where I’m told I have to have to stay for 2-3 weeks with a full cast…

The Vets are very hopeful for a full recovery, however for a 16 year old kid, I’ve become a huge financial stress. Dawson is my whole world, and it hurts me to see him in this situation, I’m really sorry I got caught in that fence. He’s working very hard to pay my vet bills, but he really needs your help, as this is a lot for someone his age to handle. Any Donation big or small would make a huge difference in both of our lives. The funds will be used directly to pay my large Vet bills.

They say if he can’t continue to afford my care, I will be out of options…Please don’t break up my family, I promise I’ll be good from now on! Please donate and help us reach our goal and cover a part of my expenses!

Thank you for hearing my story
