Move That House!

Donation protected
In Newburgh, Indiana, we love our history. Settled in 1803, along the banks of the Ohio River, we’re one of the oldest towns in the state.

During the 19th century, our little town was one of the busiest river ports along the Ohio River corridor.

Many of the historic structures in our quiet little river town date to the 1840s-1860s. And, right now, one of them, really needs your help.

This little red brick house has nearly 150 years of history in its walls. It’s listed with the State as a “notable” historic site, and been dated to the mid 1800's. Its construction and building materials are all consistent with “territorial” Indiana.  Hand-chiseled limestone steps and lintels, and locally kiln-fired bricks date the structure to the mid 1800’s.

The little red brick house has reportedly served as a blacksmith’s shop, a stage coach delivery point, an ice house, and even a museum.

But, for many years, this little historic gem was concealed, as another, larger structure was built around it, completely concealing its existence.  In 1986, the building burned, revealing the little red brick house for the first time in nearly a century.  After the fire, the little red brick house was lovingly restored and maintained by its then owner, Virgil Simpson. Recently, the property on which the little red brick house stands, changed hands, and the new owner’s plans do not include preserving the little red brick house on its original site.

This is where we need your help! We need to raise upwards of $60,000 to move the house to another location. We have already received a tremendous amount of support in our community, donations are starting to roll in, The Town of Newburgh, has offered a permanent site on city land, and our local Historic Preservation Commission is committed to guiding the project.  Members in the community have started grant writing efforts with state and private backing. A couple of the grant proposals offer matching funds, so, whatever we raise will be matched, dollar for dollar.  Every donation counts!  It will cost about $7.00 per foot or .58 per inch to move the little house to it's new home.
We're visiting schools and organizations in the area to amplify our fundraising effort.  But we really need your help too!

It’s a big job to move a little house! The historic structure must be lifted off its current foundation with hydraulic jacks, then rolled to its new location about 1 mile up the Ohio River. Once in its new home, the little red brick house will join a complex of historic structures that include a log cabin, cottages and a lock master’s house on the river.

We know that the little red brick house will be loved by the Newburgh community in its new home among other the historic structures. It will be accessible to greater numbers of people in the future and possibly used in connection with a new amphitheater, which is in the long range plan for the site.
But, we need your help to get the project rolling, literally. Your donation is tax deductible and all funds will be handled by Historic Newburgh Inc.
Please pledge your support today as we need to raise upwards of $60,000.
Thank you so much for your support with our project! We can hardly wait to show you how good it’s going to look at its new location!

Hopefully someday, you'll come to visit our historic town and share one of our beautiful sunsets on the Ohio River.

Thank you again, for your generosity and investment in future of our historic community!
