Liberia Youth Corps Project

Tax deductible
Founded in 2006, Greening Youth Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting diverse and underrepresented youth to careers in conservation. GYF Liberia was established and accredited in the year 2014 by the Government of Liberia to legally operate as an NGO. The goal of this campaign is to raise funds for the GYF Liberia Youth Corp Project, which strives to be a collaborative development resource in conservation and school gardening activities that will enable youth and young adults to become environmental stewards within their communities.

Liberia is among the three countries in West Africa that were seriously affected by the Ebola outbreak in 2014. Before the outbreak, Liberia had suffered from chronic food insecurity since the times of the Liberian Civil War (1989-2003). The outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) tremendously increased food insecurity. Due to the shortage of food, coupled with the uncertainty of surviving the epidemic, the food situation worsened as did the acute shortage of agricultural laborers in the country.

The great conflict known as the Liberian Civil War has been recognized as one of Africa's deadliest wars. This struggle claimed more than half a million lives and displaced a million more into refugee camps in bordering countries. Currently,  at least 50% of Liberia's  population is under the age of 20, and with an unemployment rate of 80%, strategies must be set in place to strengthen the workforce of America's sister country.

The lack of interest in agriculture by the government and previous generation causes the Liberian youth to also lack interest in agriculture. The youth no longer identify agribusiness as a means of livelihood or self-employment, thereby creating untold unemployment among the youthful populace. Sister country to the United States, Liberia has an abundance of natural resources that are deserving of protection and conservation by the Liberian people. This project seeks to unite students from other public schools with their peers and provide the necessary training for self-employment to enhance their livelihood.

Your generous donations will assist GYF Liberia to reinforce agricultural programs in various public schools to reawaken the spirit of agriculture as a sustainable career path. We will be forever thankful for your contributions which help establish an agricultural infrastructure of paramount importance for Liberia, where nearly half of its entire population of 4.3 million is considered vulnerable to food insecurity.
