Science Outreach-A Gift From Kroto

Donation protected
My name is Dr. Steve F. A. Acquah, director of Sir Harold Kroto’s research group and the global educational outreach initiative (GEOSET). We are fundraising in honor of Sir Harold W. Kroto, one of the 1996 Nobel Laureates in Chemistry who discovered Fullerenes -  C60 (Buckyballs).

An ardent advocate for science education, Sir Harold Kroto joined the FSU faculty after teaching at the University of Sussex in England for 37 years. Harold passed away in April 2016 due to complications from ALS. He is deeply missed by everyone here, but we are dedicated to continuing on the path that Harry established to create science research and outreach opportunities for high school students and university students to help reduce the barriers toward research for the next generation of young scientists.

One of the most rewarding workshops we run for school children is the Buckyball workshop. These involve bringing children from K-12 schools to locations where they take part in an interactive presentation on basic algebra, learning the relationship between the faces, corners, and edges of an object through an introduction to Euler’s equation. The children then construct a Buckyball from a molecular model kit, which they keep. The workshop provides a perfect environment for children to work together, strengthening diversity through shared tasks, participation, and creativity.

We also run Buckyball workshops for school children through live broadcasts around the world using our broadcasting equipment. We live-stream presentations and ensure that the Buckyball kits have been sent in advance with instructions for the remote instructors to help with any problems.

Your financial support will help us maintain the legacy of Sir Harold Kroto by providing support materials for workshops and laboratory supplies for science outreach activities.

We will also support the ‘Kroto Family Education Foundation’ with joint science outreach events.

Please help us to inspire the bright, young rising stars in your community with this initiative! Your generous gift truly matters and will be a tremendous help in our effort to promote scientific research among our youth by offering them an opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research and science outreach activities.
