Kassidy's Kidney Transplant

Kassidy Frevert was a normal healthy 6 year old girl who loved playing with her American Girl Dolls and going to school until she was somehow exposed to ecoli in November of 2012. Kassidy was on a trip to her grandmothers for a long weekend when she started to have symptoms of abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Kassidy was taken to Children's hospital and was admitted for these symptoms. A few days later the doctors diagnosed Kassidy with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome also know as HUS. The doctors were able to isolate the type of ecoli that Kassidy was exposed to and unfortunately this kind of ecoli( 0157) releases a toxin know as shinga toxin that causes the HUS. As a result of the HUS, Kassidy became very ill causing her to need a breathing tube and her kidneys shut down. Shortly after Kassidy was hospitalized her 1 year old brother Kevin also started having symptoms of bloody diarrhea and was diagnosed with being exposed to ecoli as well. Thankfully Kevin never developed HUS and was released from the hospital a week later.
Kassidy spent a month in the ICU in critical condition and just before they were going to discharge her home still in kidney failure and needing dialysis, the doctors realized she had two holes in her colon and was rushed off for emergency surgery. Kassidy became very sick on the operating table and the doctors were unable to close up her body due to her unstable condition. Kassidy was once again was admitted to the ICU and put on a breathing tube while they tried to stabilize her condition. Kassidy was brought back into surgery the Friday after Thanksgiving and the surgeons were able to create a colostomy and close up her body after removing 90 percent of her large intestine. Kassidy remained in the hospital until the end of December struggling to recuperate from an extensive surgery and still in kidney failure requiring dialysis. When Kassidy left the hospital she was so weak and debilitated she could not stand up or even sit for long periods of time. Kassidy could not even return home to PA until January because she was too weak to withstand the car ride home. The Health department was never able to isolate what product Kassidy and her brother consumed that was contaminated with the ecoli.
Today Kassidy is still in kidney failure and recently had another surgery to reverse her colostomy. Kassidy's condition requires her to take more than 12 pills daily; being 6 years old she struggles with taking so much medication that often makes her feels sick to her stomach. Kassidy is walking today and able to play with her little brothers but is only able to go to Kindergarten a few hours a week due to her fragile condition and need for dialysis three days a week. Hopefully, this summer Kassidy will be able to get her fathers kidney to be transplanted. Kassidy and her family face many struggles each day due to her illness and need for so much medical care. Kassidy will unfortunately likely need more than one donated Kidney in her lifetime and we are trying to raise money for her as she will face a lifetime of medical expenses and needs. Hopefully, soon, Kassidy can return to being a normal 6 year old girl who just loves going to school and play with her dolls.
