The San Francisco Gem and Mineral Society (SFGMS) is a volunteer-run society with a mission to provide access to lapidary arts and education in beadworking, metal smithing, cutting/grinding/polishing stones to make into jewelry and carvings. The club is open to the public to join (439 members currently), and provides one-on-one instruction along with collaboration with others. Tools and equipment are available at our clubhouse, which is open daily, for $3 each day: much much less than is charged for instruction in other settings! It is open in evenings, and people busy with jobs and families can come  whenever they can, without attending regularly or needing to complete a formal course schedule. We are avid rockhounders, and our aim is to open the eyes of the public to the beauty of rocks in the world around us. We regularly run trips to find the rocks and gems we fashion into jewelry and art.

We need money to upgrade our workroom, which dates from the 1960s with equipment that has reached its limits of being successfully repaired. The money will be used to purchase new grinding wheels, rock saws, upgrade the electrical and plumbing systems and to upgrade the facility to accomodate people with physical limitations. We need the money as soon as possible, as we are hoping to make the workroom safe and the equipment up-to-date to attract artists and persons wanting to gain these skills, whether first or second career-oriented, hobbyists, or persons wanting to gather in this diverse community.

Getting funding for these upgrades means a lot to us, as our volunteers have worked hard to maintain the aging infrastructure and tools in our clubhouse. We hope to draw more people into this field, which, of course, is our passion. We also encourage people to come to our open houses and to our annual show, generally held in August at the Hall of Flowers at Golden Gate park, where you can see the work of our all-volunteer club to promote the jewelry and lapidary arts! Thank you for considering helping us reach our goals.

Much more useful than a political contribution! Good luck with the campaign.
