Joe is my beloved fiancé and my best friend. Joe is from Knowlton and I am from Blairstown. We met in 2004 at North Warren Regional High School and started dating shortly after prom weekend. About 9 months ago we bought our first home together in Knowlton Twp and recently got engaged on July 16, 2016.

Joe has always been the life of the party and a great friend to many. He's known for his patriotism (American flag T-shirts), his engaging personality and that captivating smile with those awesome dimples. Our dog, Nixon, is his pride and joy and his family means everything to him. He's a hardworking man with a huge heart. He's a loving uncle, supportive little brother, caring son & my whole entire world.

Joe loved to ride his motorcycle - it was his happy place, but on Saturday, August 20th, he went for a ride to the Hawks Nest with his father and had an accident on the way home. We may never know what happened to cause the accident that evening, but we thank God everyday that he is alive. He had to taken by MediEvac to Lehigh Valley Hospital (a level 1 trauma center) and is still currently in the trauma neuro intensive care unit. He sustained many serious injuries and needed to have two surgeries. Though he is slowly improving, his road to recovery is going to be a very long one. Upon discharge from the hospital, Joe will be transferred to an acute rehabilitation center for what could be weeks/months.

As many of you can imagine, it has been a very tough two weeks for us, his family and friends. The outpouring of love, support, prayers, and positive vibes from this wonderful community we live in and grew up in has been amazing and so greatly appreciated. Many of you have asked what you can do to help us  further and while asking for financial assistance is not easy, the medical bills have already begun to come in (the mediEvac alone was $55,000). While Joe does have some motorcycle & medical insurance, it is very limited and will certainly not be enough to cover the expenses that will accumulate.

We deeply appreciate any amount you can contribute along with your continued prayers. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

Sincerely,

Ashley Thorn, Joe Mahaffey & our families

As many of you know, but others may not.. Joe is an alumni of Centenary University - Class of 2010. His mother is also an alumni as well as long time employee / faculty member. His sister and my sister are ALSO alumni of Centenary!! With that being said... the University, the President & his wife, as well as many other awesome volunteers have organized a wonderful fundraiser event to take place at Rutherford Hall in Hackettstown on September 9, 2017 with proceeds helping to support Joe in his continued recovery. There will be a silent auction, live music, food and fun for the whole family! We are so grateful for the university for hosting such an amazing event and we hope to see you all there! www.centenaryuniversity.edu/heyhaffwegotyourback

Well.. it's been a long, hard year but Joe has come a hell of a long way & I could not be more proud of him. The first photo is from today - we celebrated alongside family & friends and it was a great day! We are so very thankful for all of you, near & far for supporting us through everything! The second photo was from about 2 months ago during our beach vacation. Joe is still working extremely hard at therapy 3 times a weeks and at home on his strength, function & mobility and continuing to show improvements weekly as he becomes more independent. Joe is truly a miracle and we thank God everyday! ❤️

Hi all! Just wanted to provide a quick update.. Joe is doing very well & is still currently at Kessler making steady improvement! Joe is scheduled to be discharged home on December 8th and will continue outpatient therapy at Kessler 3 days a week. With this transition to the next phase of his recovery, we will again be met with many new challenges upon transitioning home. GoFundMe has notified me that today is "Giving Tuesday," so if you haven't already & are looking to give to a good cause, your support would be greatly appreciated! We are so blessed to have you all in our lives; your generosity and continued support have been amazing!

Thank you ❤️
