Journal Project in Egypt

Greetings everyone!
My name is MiLisa Coleman, a proud native of Cleveland, OH.
Thank you for taking the time to check out my gofundme campaign. I am excited to share my vision and with humility I ask for your help in seeing it come into fruition.
My goal is to deliver a compelling, short-form view of life in Egypt and the Middle-East / North Africa. I will be writing a series of essays and conducting a photo series touching on veganism, intersectionality, cultural traditions, and everyday life.
The rich history of Egypt and its geopolitical positioning is worth an in-depth look from a sensitive cultural lens and historical context. I plan to visit for 45 days in January, immersing myself in the culture and traditions of Egyptian society.
Growing up, I always had an affinity to learn about other cultures. I enjoyed watching the narratives of the PBS’ documentary series, Global Voices and the explorer spirit of Globe Trekker.
I am forging my own career path as an independent media professional. Going into this project, I employ applicable travel and work experiences that have prepared me for this trip. As a junior and Spanish language student at Euclid High School, I traveled to Europe for a spring break trip. My classmates and I took in the history of London, Paris, and Madrid. While there I kept a journal and took pictures with my disposable camera documenting the experience.
I earned my Bachelor of Arts at Cleveland State University in Digital Media with minors in Sociology and Black Studies. During my undergraduate career at Cleveland State University, I participated in a study abroad program with Morehouse College. I traveled to Ghana, West Africa. While there, I participated in a cross-cultural exchange with Ghanaian students. I curated a blog fulfilling coursework requirements that included photos and academic papers. I still relish over the experience.
After graduating from college, I interned at the National Black Programming Consortium, assisting with pre-production logistics for their documentary series Afropop: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange. It shared the modern stories of the African Diaspora. Simultaneously, I developed curriculum with another nonprofit REACT to FILM structured around issue-based documentaries. Similarly, I produced video content for WVIZ/Ideastream (PBS-Cleveland) and an educational software company.
I currently run an online website serving as portfolio and personal space to share my wavelength, (Digimercy.com).

Transcending national borders and embracing the differences as I embark on an invaluable cultural immersion experience. Throughout, my life I have connected with people from all over the world; sharing music, food, and cultural practices. What always resonates with everywhere I have been fortunate to travel to is the humanness. I hope that my work expresses that key fact. I am very passionate about storytelling as a form of preservation and creating bonds among all people.
Your contribution will help pay for the flight, in-country incidentals and equipment.
Thank you gifts:

$50: Handwritten Letter and Post Card
$100: Handwritten Letter, Postcard, and Souvenir
