Midwifery Volunteering in Sri Lanka

Donation protected
Hello!

I am in my 2nd year of my midwifery training at the University of East Anglia and loving it! This year I have been given the opportunity to volunteer at a maternity hospital in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.

I am very excited to go and experience midwifery care in a country so different from our own and to give a helping hand wherever possible. The midwives in Anuradhapura have to adapt to challenging conditions such as a high patient to staff ratio and under-resourced wards with old equipment; whilst the women must give birth with no pain relief due to unaffordable medication costs (blimey!). Despite the desperate lack of resources, the staff do an incredible job of looking after their new and experienced mums.

During my time there I will be assisting staff wherever I can, relieving the staffing issues and assisting in complicated births, all whilst learning how a different culture practice. As volunteers, I will also be providing these mothers and their families with invaluable advice, support and time to talk through their experience whether it be good or bad.

Unfortunately, as a poor student I am unable to fund this incredible opportunity all by myself... I need your help. I would be eternally grateful for any donation you are able to offer no matter how small.

Thank you for your kindness!

Love,
Christie
