Martin's Got Heart

Martin serves the community as Director of the CSRA Regional Planning Commission. He is a healthy 42 year old, a father to Alex (a gifted 3rd grader at Stevens Creek Elementary), and husband of 16 years to Georgianna (who is an instructional designer at Augusta University). He exercises regularly at the YMCA and lately started feeling winded when working out. A regular annual physical flagged high blood pressure. A few more days of high blood pressure and chest pain led to visits to Urgent Care and the family doctor. The answer: a scary tri-factor of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar. The family doctor recommended in-depth tests through the ER. A few tests later we learned that Martin is diabetic and that his heart is only functioning at 25-30% capacity. After probing his heart to check for blockages, it became clear that not only were there several blockages, but also some parts of his arteries have basically withered. Open-heart, bypass surgery is the recommended treatment. Martin is now in the best hospital in town for this kind of procedure. Since his hospitalization here he had a heart attack. He is on more medicine than one can count, including insulin. He will remain in the critical care unit until his heart can adequatly function on its own. The future is unclear but we are praying for Martin to make (and surpass) his wedding anniversary this September 13th and to return to a comfortable and active lifestyle.
