Pebble Creek Conservation Project
Donation protected
The Portneuf River Project is a collaboration of both private and government organizations dedicated to preserve and protect the Porteuf River in East Idaho. We have been working on the Pebble Project for 5 years and have done amazing things. We've installed 600 yards of riparian fence to protect the main stem of the river. We've restored over one mile of two branches of Pebble Creek to their pre 1941 channels and we've fenced all of that off from incursions by livestock. The Fish and Game says that the restored channels will be 8 times more productive for rearing Yellowstone Cutthroat trout than the previosly straigtened channels were. We dug a stock water well and installed off stream water troughs to benefit livestock and protect the streams. We have worked with five ranchers with water rights on Pebble Creek who all agreed to form an irrigation district that will use LESS water than they have rights for in order to leave more water in the streams to benefit fish. In exchange we have installed a gravity fed irrigation system that is many times more efficient than the flood irrigation systems that they previously used.
Our problem is that the material and construction costs were higher than we anticiapated and we are now short on funds to finish this critical project.
We have invested over $500,000 in these projects and this money is desperately needed to allow us to keep our promise to the landowners and bring this project to a successful completion.
Our funding to date has come from numerous sources: Government 319 grants, Darden Corporation, Trout Unlimited, South East Idaho Fly Fishers, Carribou Soil and Water Conservation District and others.
This project will help improve the health of the river by reducing sediment load and taking less water for irrigation from the streams and it means a make or break deal for the last landowner.
As Project Director I'm at a loss to find the funds to get this done and it is causing me to lose sleep. We need to get this finished.
