Help DACA teachers get to Mexico

Donation protected
My name is Eva Grajeda and I’m the Co-Founder of Volunteers Mexico, an organization that believes all children in Mexico deserve a quality bilingual education where they can acquire the skills needed to become competitive and have life options. In partnership with Teach for Mexico (ExM), Volunteers Mexico places English speaking volunteers into ExM classrooms supporting teachers during English classes.

This July, Volunteers Mexico is planning to take 20 DACAmented teachers to Puebla, Mexico as part of a leadership journey. Through this experience, these DACA teachers will attend leadership sessions, participate in school visits, and meet with leaders and educators from Mexico. Aside from providing valuable skills that they can use in the classroom once they return to the US, this experience  will allow these DACA teachers to further develop their leadership, explore their strengths, values, and identity.

For all of these 20 teachers, this will be the first time traveling outside of the U.S., and for the majority of them, who are Mexican citizens, this will be the first time they will visit their home country in more than 15 years.  Volunteers Mexico truly believes that this experience will transform the lives of these young DACA educators, allowing them to become the most impactful leaders of social justice change in our country.

We respectfully seek your support to sponsor these DACAmented teachers to participate in this opportunity. The total cost for each teacher is $500, which includes their lodging, food and transportation.

Below are quotes from some of the teachers participating in this experience:

“Attending the leadership journey program will provide context for the educational setting and environment many of my current students experienced before coming here, and will allow me to adjust instruction accordingly to ensure their success. In addition, the program will give me the opportunity to observe the best instructional practices implemented by teachers in Mexico allowing me to strengthen and reflect on my own instruction here in Houston. Finally, attending the leadership journey program will offer me irreplaceable insight into Mexican history and culture that I can then use to build my Latin American history and culture curriculum for next year.”

“This Leadership journey will be able to expand my understanding of why things are the way they are in my home country—a country that I don’t know enough of. When I was eight years old, I crossed the border with my family to immigrate into the United States. My memories of Mexico are foggy but they remind me of how broken my family was—my father spent most of our childhood away from us, repeatedly risking his life to cross the border in order to work in the US, and my mother struggled to make ends meet by selling tortillas by the pound from our humble home made out of a cardboard-like material called lamina. I can only imagine that the decision my parents made to leave our country took incredible courage and resiliency. I believe this journey will shed more light on the reason my parents, like many others, decided to uproot in order to pursue the idealized American Dream.”

“Beyond the fortune of strengthening the connect with my Mexican heritage, this program provides a valuable network of leaders working for the Latino and immigrant communities. I am committed to joining this network and work for the demands of the Latino community and other communities of color. As a teacher, it is valuable for me to seek ways in which i can be a resource to other immigrant communities, especially those empowered through education.”
