No More Lead

I would like to tell you about some really wonderful people. Brent, Saeri and their son Ian have been living in a house that has been in Brent's family for several generations. Last month, after Saeri noticed Ian putting paint chips in his mouth, she requested a non-routine blood test, a lead level. It came back very elevated (63). Even after another, more accurate test was taken (venous instead of finger prick), his level was still high enough (59) to merit a stay in the hospital for chelation therapy. He tolerated that well and is now continuing his treatment and monitoring at home....well sort of. Due to the source of the lead being in their home, Ian and Saeri have had to live elsewhere for the time being, with Brent visiting when he can. The home needs serious lead abatement, including all new windows and all new paint in the affected areas. The experts have been called in and have done their evaluations. So this leaves this family with the expense of two households, extra travel and of course the whole abatement process. To add insult to injury, one of their vehicles was totaled by a speeder while it was parked at 1:00AM on a Saturday night. They are working with insurance but as we all know the older cars never get anywhere near what it costs to actually replace it. Did I also mention that their washing machine decided to stop working in the midst of all this?????
So even if they get help from the city, it won't defray all the costs of the lead abatement and the extra expense of living in two separate places. I offered to write up this page a while ago, and they finally acquiesced (the wonderful stubborn folks that they are). Please consider donating to help this great family that has hit a run of bad luck. I know for a fact that they have helped many folks themselves and will continue to do so the rest of their lives. Thank you!
