My name is Alexandra and I have Alopecia. I was diagnosed at the age of 6 and have been living with this condition for 19 years. For those of you who don't know Alopecia is an autoimmune disorder that cause your brain to shed excess hair can be anywhere from thinning to patches to completely bald. Effecting the head and body. My strain varies from patches to complete baldness over my entire body. For 11 years I have worn off the shelf lace capped wigs. And while the quality has improved greatly over the years these always appear unnatural, uncomfortable and not at all secure on my head in my day to day life.
I have 2 small children and let myself get into a slump and gained a large amount of weight. I've decided to make the change and get my health back on track but my wigs are holding me back, I can't run or swim or do upside down or laying down exercises due to the constant fear of my wig falling off. I don't do carnival rides, sports or dance and some windy days I'm even scared to go outside...
I hold back to much in my life due to this fear of exposure. I know it sounds ridiculous because it's "just hair" and everyone knows of my condition. But it's very personal and loosing my wig in public is a debilitating fear.
Luckily there is an amazing company called Freedom Wigs. They produce human hair, lifelike, silicon based suction wigs. These incredible products are made to order from a mould of the wearers own scalp, creating a vaccum seal from the skin to wig. These incredible things do not come off until you want them too. Something like this would change my entire life, if not save my life by allowing me to life actively and fully. Unfortunately this amazing technology does come at a large cost to a parent of 2 small children and any government funding takes months to process. So I'm asking for help, from friends and family and complete strangers with some spare change to help me live a better life. If I reach my target before government funding comes through I pledge to donate that money to the Alopecia Areata Fpundation of Australia and their Wigs for Kids appeal.
