Grandma's House Math Academy

My names is Flora Johnson.  I have been in education for more than 30 years.  In 2007, I retired from the Elk Grove Unified School District and returned to the place of my youth, Tulare, California and started an afterschool tutoring program called Grandma's House.  At Grandma's House the volunteer staff and I tutor students in grades K - 6 in the areas of reading, math and language arts. 

As a child growing up, I struggled in school, but with the support of others in my community, I made it and have had a wonderful and successful life! It is my time to give back.   

The money we have requested will be use to purchase a house for our math academy and for the repairs and landscaping  of the property.  The property will serve as our 7th and 8th grade on-line math academy.   With the support of our math coach and high school mentors, we will use the Khan Academy math program.  A lot of our students struggle with math and just need a little support to be successful.  We need to make this math academy work for at-risk students. 

This property became available at an inopportune time.  We have just finished installing a modular building for our 3 and 4 year old preschool.  At this time, we do not have the money to purchase the property, which is right next to the property we now own.  The funds for the purchase of this property are needed ASAP!

With your help we can open the math academy for seventh and eigth graders.  Seventh graders have come to Grandma's House  seeking help with their math.   We have assigned high school mentors who work in our K-6 program to assist them.   We are working hard to make a difference in the lives of at-risk students in our community.

The purchase of this property would mean there would be a math program designed for these students.  It would mean  alot to the students who are seeking help and you would be a supporter in the fulfillment of the vision of Grandma's House, "A Literacy Center" for children in the community.
