Dr. David R. Smith, a Professor at the University of New Hampshire and a distinguished member of the Art History community, passed away July 30, 2016. His passion and specialty was Northern Renaissance Art, a subject that provided him a lifetime of learning and teaching in his search for what he would call the “truth.” His love for complexity, beauty, and education was reflected in his spirited lectures as well as his many articles.
His final book titled, Privacy and Civilization in Dutch Art 1650-1700 "is a fundamental rethinking of the forms and meanings of Dutch realism in general, based on a dichotomy between private and public sensibilities that looks forward to modernity."
He considered this book to be the apex of a rich and full career and was so proud of its upcoming publication at the University of Delaware Press. As he once wrote, "Not to toot my own horn too loudly, but the readers for Privacy and Civilisation at the Delaware Press call it “brilliant, entertaining, and thoughtful.” And among other nicely quotable remarks: “The innovative, very well considered arguments in this book will make an important contribution to our understanding of 17th-century Dutch art. The author’s methodology … will also interest art and cultural historians well beyond the field of Netherlandish art history.”
The only barrier to its publication now is the cost of the copyright on the images in the book. Please help us to honor his memory and cherish his work by making a donation towards the publication of his final book in lieu of flowers.
