"Love of books is born on the laps of mothers and fathers." - Unknown
It certainly was in the Bartson family!! Our mother Lucy read passionately and encouraged reading throughout her life. She appreciated libraries because books were precious in the Nebraska farm community where she grew up.
In loving memory to Lucy, her family, friends and others are installing a Little Free Library (much like the picture above) in front of an agency that serves Latinos in Richmond, Calif. Clients of the agency and their families, as well as the neighboring community can use and share books from this library any day or time.
Your financial assistance will provide:
Picture books for families to share during that special 'lap time'
Bilingual books for children to read with their parents.
Enjoyable reading material for young readers to keep academic skills during the summer.
A source for paperbacks that neighbors can read and pass on.
A destination within walking distance for mothers and young people to pick up something to read.
Literature for all ages in English, Spanish or both.
Why bet on this project?
Beth who will be the steward of this Little Free Library is committed to making it successful. She lives a few blocks away from its proposed location and teaches in the local school district. Installing the Library is the beginning of a learning process to create something that the will be used by everyone in the community.
Why Spanish and bilingual books? Shouldn't children learn English?
Yes! Of course parents of English learners want their children to have English academic skills. They DO learn English. Sadly second language learners often miss the benefits of being literate in BOTH languages. Young people who become fluent and literate in two languages have tremendous advantages in school and in employment.
Honoring your donation:
For every $10 donated a bookplate will be placed in the front of the book with the donor’s name and the name of any person (or event) honored/remembered in your gift.
