Last summer the doctor told my mother I only had a couple of days to live, but thanks to an amazing neurologist and my mother I am alive, and very slowing getting better.

I have lived with a series of medical problems since I was 9 years old - gastrointestinal, pulmonary, metabolic, neurological. I am now 25. For almost 15 years, I kept getting worse, but I tried to have a normal life. School was my passion and in 2011 I graduated from Chico State, Summa Cum Laude, with a degree in Sociology. My health kept getting worse. The pain was intense. I had extreme sensory overload, so that every stimulus  - sight, sound, smell - everything caused pain. By last summer when I was in Stanford Hospital, the pain was so bad that I welcomed the thought of death. Then we met Dr. Azzolino who finally figured out that all of my problems were because my brain was not working right.

I have made a lot of progress in the last 9 months but I have a long recovery road ahead. After 6 months of treatment the pain became less intense, now I can finally sit in a room with other people. I still can not read or watch TV or have much activity around me because it causes sensory overload. My doctors believe I can eventually have a normal life. I hope so. Mom is devoting her life to getting me well. Insurance does not come close to paying my medical costs, and then there are lots of other costs too. I see doctors several times a week for treatment, which costs us about $3000/month and the doctors are in San Francisco - 180 miles away. We drive down there every week! Mom is trying to find us a place to live closer to the doctors so we don't have to drive so much.

When I was little I had lots of dreams of growing up. For several years my only wish was for the pain to go away. BEING HEALTHY IS MY BIGGEST WISH, but I am starting to think maybe there can be more. I dream about going on a date with a nice guy, being able to sit in a restaurant, watch a movie, and read again. I dream about having a family. And I dream about being able to use my sociology degree to help others.

By the way, this is my story, but I had to have someone else write it, because I can't look at a computer without getting severe pain. I will be so grateful for any donations that will allow me to continue to have treatments and get better. The doctors think I need another year of intense treatment.

I appreciate my friend Patrick encouraging me to participate in this video. I typically abstain from showing the ugliness I feel on camera. I'm glad I decided otherwise. These stories need to be told. Please watch and share. Feel free to tag me on Facebook if you share!

Fox 5 presented to a special report: Lyme and Reason. I am unable to watch videos because of neurological complications from Lyme disease.
I am told this special is unprecedented and offers a valid window into this epidemic.
Please watch.

Brianna, You are an amazing young woman. I have been following your progress over the last year when I became aware of your condition through your mother who was a classmate of mine in highschool. It was through facebook that I was able to connect with her and learn about the struggle that you have been facing. First of all I want to congratulate you on your amazing perseverence through this illness to complete your education. So many young men and women your age just quit and give up when things get hard. They don't face half of the struggles that you do and they still, give up and don't finish school. Your mom has done an amazing job raising and caring for you and it shows in the way you live your life . I am a Christian and I have learned to lean on God when times get tough. It is the love of God and our family that brings us through these tough trials, like the one you are facing now. In the Bible, in the book of Jeremiah, it says, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. " I want to encourage you today Brianna that God does have a plan for your life. As you seek Him and lean on Him he will reveal that plan to you. I have been praying for you as I'm sure many of your friends and family have. I will continue to pray that he gives you continued strength and courage as you face the tough days ahead and that He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 tells us, Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart." That is my prayer for you. You have been such an inspiration to me. I have a son your age that suffers from a chronic illness that causes him alot of pain and frustration and it is amazing to see that often times those that struggle the most physically end up being the strongest! My son is amazing and has endured much, just like you. Twice he was paralyzed completely. But God has been there through it all and he is now stable. He has learned that he can do all things through Christ who gives him strength. In Phillipians 4:13 it says, I can do everything through him who gives me strength. May God grant you strength, courage and endurance as you continue your journey on the road to recovery. May He give you His peace that surpasses all understanding. You got this Brianna!!! You and your mom are strong women and the love that you share will bring you through. I look forward to reading your updates and hearing about your milestones of recovery. I was able to make a donation of $100 earlier this year and I hope to soon be able to make another contribution. God be with you!
