Remembering Dr. Fatemeh Kamkar

Dr. Fatemeh Kamkar passed away on Tuesday July 26th, 2016 following a long battle with cancer. Fatemeh successfully completed her PhD in Cellular and Molecular Medicine in the laboratory of Dr. David Park at the University of Ottawa in 2015.
That achievement was, no doubt, the biggest testimony of her infinite resilience and determination. For more than 3 years she fought simultaneously against multiple rounds of cancer, for her right to stay in Canada and against numerous obstacles between her and the completion of her degree.
In 2011, Fatemeh made headlines when her application for permanent residency was rejected while still working on her PhD and battling cancer. Both CBC and the Ottawa Citizen did stories on her case and in 2012 MP Paul Dewar pleaded her case to the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism.
Fatemeh’s strength and perseverance through these difficult times are indications of her character. She was a kind and thoughtful person who never gave up. She remained happy and in good spirits even in the darkest of times. Fatemeh was a wonderful co-worker, friend, sister, daughter and aunt. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
We are setting up this GoFundMe page in order to help her family offset the substantial medical and funeral expenses they have endured. As an international student, not only did Fatemeh pay astronomically high tuition rates, she was also responsible for all her medical costs. As such, any donation would be greatly appreciated.
