For the children #4Corners
$2,455 of $10,000 goal
Dear All who contributed to this campaign. We made it possible for Dylan to spend time with his family this week. This is a message from Kirra his sister. This visit would not have been possible without your compassionate response to a child in need, and his family. Your coming together with others in this giving community has been such a blessing. When Dylan is released, we can directly support him access help he needs. Thanks so much to Alex, who works with Peter O'Brien who worked with me to facilitate these funds getting to where they needed to go. We did good people, we did good. Love to you all, hug those you love, tell them what they mean to you. That is the gift you gave the Vollers. I will keep you updated with more soon so you know how else you have made the difference! Have a wonderful weekend and safe travels to Alice Kirra and all. "Thank you to all who contributed to helping us get enough money to be able to visit Dylan over this past week and a bit he's only allowed 2 hours a week so we managed to have one 1 hour visit last week and two 1 hour visits this week it wasn't much time with him but the time we spent with him meant the world his first visit was just with me (Kirra) his big sister which was nice we caught up and the hour flew by and then his second visit me mum and an old friend from Alice Springs that Dylan looked up to a bit through his rapping you could tell he enjoyed that company and talking about music and life and telling us funny stories and on our last visit we took little brother caleb who stole our visit and all our cuddles, Dylan just adores his baby brother and kept showing him new tricks and playing tick tac toe and Rock Paper Scissors reminding me all about our childhood together when we would put on shows for mum and pretend we were in a circus and do circus tricks now he can do those things with caleb although he was restricted on his movement and kept looking over his shoulders to make sure he was allowed to be up playing with his baby brother he still did.. So thank you to everyone for your help in making this family time happen when it was needed the most with love Voller family xx"
Dear All, I have been in touch with Peter O Brien the solicitor of Dylan Voller, who is now filing a petition for his release on the basis of mercy. This is establishing a legal precedent unlike any other in the NT, and is supporting Dylan who is now fearful of his safety in prison since the show aired. The sad reality is that he is still inside the same system, one I know we are seeking to have interogated through the Royal Commission. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2016/aug/05/dylan-vollers-lawyers-file-petition-of-mercy-seeking-his-release-from-prison Alex, who works closely with Peter O'Brien and Dylan is in communication with Dylan's mother and sister. He contacted me to inform me that Kirra and Joanne have just driven from Alice Springs to Darwin to see Dylan for the first time in over two years. They have had two nights stay at a caravan park provided for them, and will go in to see Dylan shortly. I am hoping you would agree to supporting some of these funds being used to pay for a few more nights of accommodation at the caravan park, and for some additional funds being used to provide them with essentials to be able to provide support to Dylan, and travel back home. Having his sister and family visit him for the is an important step in the healing process for Dylan, providing much needed support to him while he is still in prison. It is unlikely that he will be released this weekend, and they had hoped to stay until he is released, but we do not know when that will happen. We appreciate your support and hope this is a good use of some funds from this campaign. Thank you again. You have helped brig this family together at a time of need. Kind Regards, Kerry Arabena http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-08-08/dylan-voller27s-troubled-past/7701704
Great stuff Kerry; you are always working so hard and this is another area where there is so much injustice. Do you have any Deakin academics on board yet? Happy to help where I can!
Hi Candy, thank you for the question. A group of about 15 academics across Australia, in our outrage over what happened to these children, decided on several courses of action including setting up this GoFundMe campaign. We were all very clear that the money go to the children who spoke up on behalf of those children who could not; so that it does not happen to any other child. We were also clear we wanted to support their families - particularly for counselling and for support to mount legal cases against the NT Government. I have worked with 2 NT Health related organisations in touch with the families and children, and have contacted Peter O Brian the solicitor for Dylan Voller. We are interested in working with these services and the solicitor to ensure funds go to where they are needed. Go Fund Me will run this for the rest of July. Go fund me has a system where the funds go directly to those for whom the funds are intended. I had hoped that we could recognise the courage and resilience of those children who spoke out on the show, and for Dylan. In order to see how the funds can be distributed - see the following from the GoFundMe website:: Can I raise money for a friend? Of course! GoFundMe has created an easy way for your beneficiary to securely access the funds you have raised. Through GoFundMe they will be given direct access to the money you have raised for them. Please note, you will not be able to enter their check or bank information during the withdrawal process, they will need to do this themselves. Contact us to set up withdrawals for your beneficiary. I do hope this helps answer your question. Thank you all in advance for your support of these children. This morning we academics as a group started off feeling helpless - we were overwhelmed and did to know what to do to help deal with the horror of what we witnessed last night. Today, we had a series of 10 action items that have given us a sense of purpose. We hope that whatever you do, how ever you do it, you feel like you are able to passionately engage in the issues that not only impact our children; but also define us as a nation. We are more than the total sum of this denigration of our rights. This was not done in my name. I did not elect officials to cover this up. This is how I take action. I hope you might join with me and others who have made an offering tot inspire hope and lets those kids know we care. @MeganM4Kids @MickGooda @GillianTriggs
Hi Kerry, I can see the potential of this campaign - would you please clarify how you will get these funds to the kids mistreated so badly in NT - and how funds will be managed to best help them? Kindly, Candy
