Help us save Koa!

Donation protected
While out for a run in the morning I saw a dog get hit by a truck. The driver never stopped, and I didn't have enough time to get the plates. When I went over to check on the dog I saw her laying in the grass with what appeared to be a broken leg. When I approached her she was incredibly friendly and let me pet her even though she was in unimaginable pain.

I ran back home and grabbed the car to go pick her up and take her to a vet. I called the local animal shelter but they only provide medication that has been donated and do not do surgeries. So I made the decision to take her to the hospital instead. I wanted to see what it was we were dealing with before I let her be euthanized.

When I got her there she was internally bleeding and suffered a completely broken Femur. The dog had no tags or chip so I knew that we were going to take on the costs of treating her. The vet said she was a young dog, probably under two years of age, and a good candidate for surgery if the bloodwork came back positive. We left her there for monitoring and stabilization overnight.

The vet asked if we wanted to call her anything and we decided on Koa. Its Hawaiian for warrior. Sure, its corny, but we figured she'd need all the help she could get to make it through this ordeal.

Well, the dog went critical after we left. They were forced to perform an emergency surgery to stop the internal bleeding. They had to remove her spleen since it had been torn and they also had to stop some bleeding from her liver.

I couldn't leave a happy and sweet dog on the side of the road to die. The medical bills will be over $2,500 by the time we pay for the orthopedic surgery to repair her leg, and the surgery that removed her spleen and repaired her liver.

While I don't normally do these kind of things, we're asking for some help in covering Koa's medical bills. If she makes it through, she'll have a forever home with us and our other dog Izzy. Or, she'll live with another family member who has volunteered to take her in just in case Izzy doesn't play well with others.

Anything helps! If praying is your thing, send some Koa's way. If praying isn't your thing, we'll take some good vibes too. If you can't donate please share on Facebook or Twitter or both!

The vet says she's got a strong outlook and that she should go in for the leg surgery Wednesday or Thursday. We will post updates periodically to keep everyone in loop! Thanks everyone for your help and time!

This is Koa just after I picked her up. She didn't even whimper or snap at me when I picked her up. I can't imagine how much pain she was in. She's such a sweet girl to let me pick her up with no problems!
Waiting on her initial diagnosis at the vet.

Poor girl fresh out of surgery for removing her spleen and patching up her liver to stop the internal bleeding.
