Help Levi "Jack" Shirley Get Home

$11,635 of $10,000 goal

Raised by 186 people in 34 months
Kate Shirley
on behalf of Susan Shirley
 ARVADA, CO
On July 19th, our family received the worst news of our life--our beloved Levi, my older brother, had been killed in combat while fighting in the YPG (Kurdish military) in Manbij, Syria on July 14th.

Levi has left behind me and our loving mom and dad, as well as so many wonderfully caring friends. He is our hero and he deserves to come home to the country he loved so much. We are all U.S. Citizens, born and raised within  the United States.

While we believed there would be costs of up to $10,000 to repatriate Levi's remains, and that was the goal we set, the U. S. Government is working on that separate issue.

Funds from this campaign are explicitly for memorial costs.

From his entire family, thank you so much for the overwhelming amount of love and support we have received from his friends all over the world. He would be honored to know how much people cared for him.

A friend of ours has set up a petition through whitehouse.gov in order to grant full military honors to Americans who die while serving in the YPG and YPJ. It would mean so much to us to have military honors at Levi's memorial, and at all the memorials for fallen Americans in the YPG. Please sign and share this petition!

We've reached our goal!!! Thank you so much to everyone who made this possible. Actually getting Levi home is still a logistical nightmare, but at least now we won't have to worry about being able to afford it. From the entire Shirley family, thank you for reaching out and supporting us during this difficult time. Let's bring our hero home!

This is Levi's sister, I just wanted to post an update thanking everyone who has shared and donated so far. All of us are so touched by the response to this campaign and we will never be able to fully express our gratitude. It's a huge relief to us not to have to worry about the financial aspect of bringing our hero home.

Still working with the State Department. Everyone is doing what they can to get Levi home, but it's not a done deal, in any sense. Lots of phone calls must be made, from me included, and the 9 hour time difference figures into that as well. As soon as we think anything is finalized--crossing fingers--we will let everyone know. Many thanks, more than words can tell, for all the support/contributions/kind words and thoughts.

Brother, you will be missed so much by so many. You lifted us all up no matter how down we were. I know you did at least that for me. You come from a long line of warriors and you were a warrior. No one can ever take that away. Every Marine should salute you. I know I do. We all miss you so much.

I never had the honor of meeting this inspiring young man, but I do know his Mom and his sister and it's very obvious that the apples didn't fall far from the tree. I am so proud of my fellow human beings who are expressing your condolences in so many ways. Supporting Susan and Kate so completely even if you've never met them. With your help they will survive this tragic loss and Levi will be resting in peace in his homeland very soon.

I hope all of you know how great is my appreciation for the heartfelt kindness of you all. And I hope to thank each of you individually. As I am not the owner of the page, many of you show up to me only as "anonymous," so it may be some time before I'm able to thank you properly. But I want all of you to know that you have made this time far less difficult than if we had had to struggle with a money problem on top of everything else. I hope everyone here is very proud to have been a part of this effort. FYI, we are still working on things but I am not worried because I definitely trust those who are doing things on our behalf.

My son Joe went to school with Jack at Arvada High and also trained with him at the Marine Recruit. We are so sorry about your loss. We hope he comes home soon. Our oldest son Danny died when he was a senior in high school. So I kind of understand your loss. Mr & Mrs. Shirley, at some point if you feel you need some other support - please contact The Compassionate Friends. They are a support group for parents who have lost a child(ren). They were a great help for me and my husband at the worst time of our lives. Our prayers are with you, your family and Jack's friends.

We continue to struggle with getting Levi home. Most people have been helpful above and beyond what I could have ever hoped for. There are many barriers, language problems, time differences, phone glitches, cultural differences (the weekend over there started at 1 pm local time, about 4 a.m. this morning here) and so on, plus some bureaucratic glitches as well. Doing everything we can, and it is a full time job even with all the help. Very thankful for all the kindness of all of you.
