Bright Tsagli is a Ghanaian national who is currently an international student in the United States. At the age of 6 my parents got separated and both parted from my life. I was taken care of by my uncle who was working with the timber industry. He helped pay my tuition and took care of me through first grade to senior high school.
After high school, I restricted my options to colleges in Germany because education was “free”. I got accepted into a language program which offered me a student visa to study there. My family had a piece of land which I sold to further my education. The German consulate requested that I deposit a minimum sum of 8,000 euros to confirm that I can afford a living at any german institute.
The selling of the family land meant a lot to the extended family but they had hopes in me to achieve my dreams in the long run. I arrived in Germany very late because my visa was delayed by the embassy. Upon my arrival, the language program already started. Life in Germany was very difficult in terms of speaking the language and also getting a job. I was given one year visa stay and needed to renew my visa the following year. The visa renewal is based on the amount of money you have in your bank account. I was enrolled in a language program at Hochschule Ravensburg-Weingarten which was a very good university located in Weingarten. The money deposited in the block account was depreciating as days passed by. I was unemployed due to firms only looking for someone who was fluent in German. This made it difficult to replace monies being spent daily. My visa renewal for the next year depended on how much I had in my bank account.
I had considered studying in the United States as an alternative. I applied to Bronx Community College and got accepted in an Engineering Science program. For me, this was an opportunity of a lifetime because I get to study in english and also pursue my dreams as a future engineer. I am very proud to be the first person to go to college in my family. First off, I am in this country without support from any relatives because I do not have family in the states.
I had to work on campus as a part-time Math tutor while being enrolled as a full-time student at BCC. I worked off the books during the weekends tutoring sixth and seventh graders Mathematics. I sometimes worked at a storage house during the week for extra income to make ends meet. Instead of being devastated, I saw this as motivation to strive extra hard for success.
Also, for the 2016-17 academic year, I was elected as the treasurer for BCC Student Government Association. I campaigned based on the struggles and less resources available to international students. I depended on scholarships and research programs on campus to pay for my tuition. Searching for scholarships was a great hustle and the ones available for international students are very limited. I have been able to stay on top of my academics despite all the shortcomings and graduated with a cumulative GPA of 3.8.
I would be grateful to receive help as soon as possible which would help me achieve my academic goals. As of now, I have a financial hold on my college account which makes it impossible to have access to my transcripts and my diploma. I applied to the City College of New York and I have not heard any admission decision because they cannot have access to my academic records. This situation is thwarting me from transferring into a four-year college.
My short-term goal is to transfer to a four-year college to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical engineering and Computer Science and minor in Political Science. I would further climb the education ladder to pursue doctoral studies in rocket systems engineering and basic automation of electronic devices. The objective is to develop rocket systems that would be environmental friendly and help control basic daily activities around by using electronic sensors and controlling modules. I would be very grateful and appreciate any donation which would be contributed towards my journey. Thank you very much in advance for your support and help and also making time to read my essay.
