My name is Reannyn Weiler and I particpated in the USA Luge Slider Search in September 2015 in Plattsburgh, NY. During the slider search I was given instruction on how to ride a wheeled sled. As a participant I had to control a wheeled sled down a ramp and manuever through a course marked by street cones. I was judged on my performance and speed.
On November 5, 2015 I was informed via email that based on my performance at the USA Luge Slider Search I was invited to the next step in the US Luge athlete recruitment program, a screening camp at the US Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY. The screening camp took place December 8-12 of 2015. At this camp I had the opportunity to slide down the Olympic Luge Track at Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, NY. Again, I was judged on my performance and speed.
On March 2, 2016 I received an email to invite me back to Lake Placid to participate in the final portion of the USA Luge Junior Development Team Camp. I attended the camp from March 27 -April 1, 2016. I had the opportunity to slide in five sessions on the luge run and participated team activities as I was further evaluated by the coaches in considersation for the luge team selection process.
On May 2, 2016 I was notified that I had been named as a member of the USA Luge Junior Development Team for the 2016-2017 season.
Recently, I attended my first luge training camp as an official member of the USA Luge Development Team. I had the opportunity to meet my teamates and work with Luge Coach, Larry Dolan. At the training camp I participated in physical testing, weight training, paddle practice, wheel training, speed work-outs, and starts practice. I got my picture taken for the official USA Luge website. I was also fitted for my pod/sled. I got a luge racing suit, gloves, spikes, as well as racing booties. The training camp was a lot of work, but tons of fun too. I made friends with my new teamates and shared fun times. I also had an opportunity to set goals for the upcoming luge season.
I will be training for seven weeks this year in Lake Placid, NY. I will also be competing in the 2017 Empire State Winter Games and the 2017 Norton Youth National Championships. While I am training I will be away from school and staying at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY. I will need a tutor to assist with academics while I train. My goal is to maintain my A average in academics while I excel at the sport of luge.
Please help support me as I train and compete in the sport of luge. Collected donations will be used to pay for coaching, lodging, tutoring, and race entry fees. As a development team athlete I am self-funded as neither the United States Luge Association nor the United States Olympic Committee provide direct financial support for the development team athletes.
