Hi Friends,

Want to hear a really positive story about the Police Department and the great work that they do that is rarely recognized? The best part is that you can get involved (and there is great food included!)

This centers around an Aging Napa Officer who is retiring at the end of this year and wants to give back to the community one last time before he leaves the department.

On July 23, 2016 Officer Chapman will set out on his bicycle to ride the “Napa 9”. The Napa Valley is surrounded by 9 major peaks which cover 125 miles and 13,000 vertical feet of climbing. Officer Chapman swears that he will complete the ride in a single day, skip all requisite doughnut breaks, and return home to serve dinner to those who sponsor him for the ride.

First Opportunity: Join him for the ride. This seems to me to be a relatively advanced ride but if you are up for some or all of it then send us a note and we will forward the specifics to you. If you can gather a few friends to sponsor you, then we will combine those donations with Chapman’s for one big donation.

Donation to what you ask? You aren’t a crazy cyclist, you say.  Well, please read further...

The Napa Police Department has a staff of great officers that do the traditional police work that we normally think about. They also have a small, quiet staff of social workers who spend their time working with the homeless population and with kids who they have identified are at risk and need extra support and guidance.

Every year a very small team inside of the PD works hard to either keep these kids from falling into the system or redirecting them through mentoring, and intervention. Some of the programs that put these kids on a better path are the “Back to School Backpack” program where kids are equipped with the correct school supplies, “Shop with a Cop” which allows the kids to accompany an Officer and purchase Christmas gifts for their family and a little something for themselves, and “Christmas Day” where families that lack the funds for a Christmas celebration receive a Christmas tree, gifts, and a meal.

What most don’t know (and why Officer Chapman wants to help) is the fact that the budget for these programs come solely from donations.  Additionally, when donations fall short, the program is funded by the generosity of individuals inside of the PD.

That’s where we come in. Officer Chapman has challenged the other officers in the department to sponsor him for the ride. He is asking for $50.00 per officer for all 9 peaks.

For anyone willing to double that to $100, you are invited to join Officer Chapman and friends for dinner and celebration that evening.

All donations go entirely to the kids’ programs.  Dinner is being donated by the Chapman family.

These folks are true Community Heroes and I hope you will make the effort to come out and spend time with them and learn more about the great work that they are doing every day.

Hey Team,
Today is the day! The riders gathered this morning at 5:00 am. and rolled out of Downtown Napa with a Police Escort at 5:30. It's now 7:45 and they are climbing the 3rd of 9 peaks. We had 1 brief safety stop to refill water bottles before they started to climb Atlas Peak. I am waiting at the Soda Canyon stop with fresh water and the first spread of snacks. If you haven't donated yet, now is a good time. They will be here soon to fuel up, lets give them good news about new donations before they head out again.
Many Thanks,
Ken A.

Hope to see you after the event at the dinner.

Hi Friends,
I wanted to give a quick update on what you accomplished during last year’s Napa9 cycling event benefiting the Napa Police Department Youth Services. Your generosity and Officer Ken Chapman’s dedication raised over $10,000.00 that all went to make a difference in the lives of at risk children in countless ways.
A year has passed and now it is time to celebrate our success by asking you to once again stand up for the work being done for these families by making a new donation. Your generosity and Chapman’s vision for such a unique event grew throughout the year such that we are all now a part of one of the Napa Valley’s premiere cycling events.
Please go now to www.Napa9.com and repeat your donation, or Increase It! Will you be here in the Valley on August 19, then purchase a dinner ticket and join us. Are you or do you know a cyclist that wants a true challenge in a World Class setting, then sign up to ride. Most importantly, Stand Up and continue your support of these kids.
Thanks in Advance,
Ken Adkins,

Dear Friends,

Thank you so much for donating to The Napa 9. I promise you every penny will go to help the youth of Napa.

The Napa 9 ride was honestly one of the hardest things I have done. I had to dig deep both mentally and physically to finish the ride. I felt elation when I saw the sun coming up over the Napa hills and the slow march of the colorful balloons working their way down valley in the pre-dawn mist. I felt the pain, anguish and self-pity while working my way over the unrelenting steep hills of our valley in 103-degree heat. I distracted myself during the 8 plus hours of riding time by thinking about the kids I have encountered during my almost 30 years on the job. I was truly brought to tears a couple of times as I remembered the pain and anguish of the kids born into dysfunctional families.

We live in a beautiful place and are blessed with great friends, happy families and good jobs. Some are not as fortunate as us and it’s a daily struggle for these families to just make it through another day. All too often the children of these families bear the brunt and weight of their parent’s struggles.

We have the opportunity and responsibility to take that weight off these children, if only for a brief moment and give them a glimmer of hope. It may be the only chance they have to see that people are generally good and giving.

If you already donated…THANK YOU… if you can find another $5.00 or $10.00 dollars it would be greatly appreciated. If you are reading this article for the first time, please find it in your heart to donate a little money.

The Go Fund Me page will be kept open till August 3rd.

Thank you for your support.
