 NEW CITY, NY
Alan Handsman was diagnosed with Stage 3 Multiple Myeloma. He has beena Volunteer Fireman of the New City Fire Department as a Assistant Chief Engineer for 23 years. Alan has also participated for many years for The Ride For Kids, (Kids with Brain Cancer). Alan's wife Tara has Lupus which limits her abilities which comes easy to others. Tara has done Fundraisers for others and has always helped those in need. They have two school aged children. Alan had a stem cell transplant 3 months ago and will not know results until the end of this month. This is a terminal cancer and they are thankful for every day. Alan was a plumber by trade and can no longer work. The cancer has done irreversible damage to his spine. Social security disability finally kicked in. It is not enough to sustain a family of four. Medical bills have become overwhelming. I know and care for this wonderful family very much. Please donate whatever you can and keep them in your prayers

The Holidays are coming! It’s better to give than receive. Alan’s medical bills are astronomical and frequent copays are strangling this family. Please consider them your Holiday donation.

Alan had his donor transplant on June 7, 2017. He has up to one year to reject. He has had some graft verses host issues and counts become very low. He has many doctor visits to monitor his condition. He still goes on fire calls when he is able because he believes in volunteering for his community. He lost his Grant from the lymphoma society because they are out of money due to lack of donations. The insurance company took him out of world donor program so there is no more assistance with any copays or the 20% for doctors who are not with insurance company. Medical Bills are astronomical.

To top it off now the school district has taking bussing away from his daughter Jade and they are trying to get it back from an unfair district. They now have added stress of a calling list for emergency rides for their daughter. Some of the Money donated will also be used as an emergency fund for Jades transportation (just in case)!

Alan has a road ahead of him and his community should support him as he has for the New City Fire Department for the past 25 years!

Update on Alan!
Alan had his three month post op appt. for his stem cell transplant. They feel stem was not a complete success and it's just a matter of time when cancer returns. They expect his will return faster than most who have transplants. Dr. Michelle Dinato feels the only way to go for Alan is a Donor transplant. He will go into world donor bank probably in September after some more testing. It can take up to three months to find a match. Dr. Dinato said there is an 88 % chance of survival rate for a remission of 6 years. The other option is Chemo until it doesn't work anymore and quality of life will not be great. Alan wants to do donor which will be a six month commitment. There are many things that can go wrong such as rejection, infections, pneumonia, etc. but we both feel God has got us! Expenses will be astronomical . His life is priceless. ❤️
