Clover's ER & ICU Expenses

Clover’s Story

Thirteen-week-old Clover and her four siblings started life - on day one – dropped off on the doorstop of our shelter, the Purr-fect Companions Sanctuary . Because their mom 's milk was insufficient, we supplemented the feedings for all five kittens from the very beginning. Despite their not so glamorous start, they thrived to become the playful, wonderful kittens they are today. In preparation for eventual adoptions, plans were made for spaying/neutering with Clover and her sister going first on July 1. Both came back to the shelter appearing to have come through the procedure fine, but Clover woke on July 4 gasping for air. Because of the holiday, we had no choice but to take her to the ER where she was immediately put on oxygen. An x-ray showed acute bronchial pneumonia with the entire left lung compromised. For days she was unable to breathe without oxygen support, remaining in guarded condition with little optimism for survival.  She refused to eat, not even accepting hand feeding, as all her energy went to just trying to breathe. Not getting any better for three days, another antibiotic was added to her medical regimen, and her condition began to gradually improve.  At only three pounds, the danger to her tiny body of not eating, even for a day or so, could have had fatal consequences. But she began showing interest in baby food by the end of the fourth day and returned to the shelter when she was finally able to breathe on room air alone. We are overjoyed on her miraculous turn-around, but she continues to take two antibiotics and must be monitored closely by the vet and shelter volunteers for another couple of weeks if not longer.

Unfortunately, the ER visit and ICU medical bills have devastated our very limited financial resources. Our non-profit shelter relies entirely on the generosity of donors to cover day-to-day expenses, so this unexpected cost is really putting us in a financial bind. With 40 other cats under our roof – a number of whom are long-term residents and require ongoing special care – we are in urgent need of financial help to keep our shelter operational and continue the care we offer to all of our cats.

We would greatly appreciate any funds you can donate as soon as possible to help cover Clover's vet bills. No donation is too small!
