The largest modern Viking sailing vessel in the world is being forced to abandon the Tall Ships Challenge 2016 and leave the Great Lakes due to outrageous pilotage fees that they were told would not apply. I am a sailor and lawyer living near the Welland Canal in Ontario, and my whole family was inspired to see Draken Harald Hårfagre as she passed through the canal on her way to Lake Erie last week.
The need for funding is urgent, as the Draken will be leaving soon to return to Norway if $400,000 USD can't be raised to pay the pilotage fees. This would be such a loss for the communities being visited around the Great Lakes, and also for the young crew who have sailed across the globe to bring this magnificent ship to our shores.
My goal is to raise $100,000 from Ontario residents who, like me, have been inspired by Draken and her crew. All funds raised, net of the GoFundMe fees, will be donated to Draken whether she is able to remain here or not. I also hope that similar campaigns in the other regions visited by Draken, or which she is hoped to visit, will raise enough funds to keep her here to complete her educational, marvellous voyage.
