Bronx Climate Justice North

Hi everyone! We're Bronx Climate Justice North (BCJN), a grassroots climate justice organization based in the North Bronx but with allies and members all over this big, beautiful borough and beyond!  We are also the Bronx local affiliate of 350.org.

A quick update, as the summer of 2017 moves into fall:

As BCJN engages deeply in resistance work to the current administration (we have trouble saying his name too), we are reaching out to new allies, such as local Indivisible groups and faith organizations, and working hard not just to resist but to BUILD alternatives. During recent weeks, BCJN has organized a new community anti-racism effort -- the N. Bronx Racial Justice coalition -- which includes a group that is working with the NYC Department of Homeless Services on local issues of homelessness and affordable housing. We organized a community Vigil for Charlottesville on August 14 in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx. The vigil brought out a large, diverse and passionate crowd of local residents calling for racial justice across the United States and in our neighborhoods. As NYC approaches the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, BCJN is working in partnership with the NYC climate justice movement to ensure that the spate of hurricanes causing so much hardship in Texas, the Caribbean, Florida and the South makes it clear to NYC and NYS elected officials that the time for emergency climate action is NOW.

Our early days:

BCJN was "born" during the summer leading up to the epic NYC People's Climate March that drew nearly half a million on September 21, 2014. We worked hard that summer to mobilize folks to turn up for the March. We also began to build alliances and friendships with longstanding environmental justice organizations particularly in the South Bronx. Once the March was over, we settled in for the long haul. For us, that meant a deep embrace of the concept of "climate justice."

Climate justice! It's a movement of movements arising from an understanding that our unjust political and economic systems create deep social inequities AND climate change. We understand that to get at the root causes, not just the symptoms of global warming, we need a systemic focus on correcting injustice. So... BCJN is as much a social justice organization as it is a climate change organization, and vice versa!

Moving into our 4th year, we need your support:

As we turn 3, we're hoping our friends will help support a 4th year of education, activism, and partnership. BCJN organizes itself around three working groups: Food Justice, Energy Solutions, and Green Vision. We need funds to continue the work of each group and for BCJN as a whole.

For our Food Justice Group that means: our ongoing campaign, in partnership with the Rural & Migrant Ministry Coalition, on behalf of rights for New York State farmworkers; restoration of a much-neglected NYC park named Tibbett's Tail, which will become a central community hub, green space, and community garden where healthy food, environmental education, and social and climate justice activism enliven the N. Bronx. We also work in support of the Kingsbridge-Riverdale Farmers' Market.

For our Energy Solutions Group, we need support for: our solidarity campaign with the Ramapough-Lenape Sweetwater Prayer Camp in Mahwah, NJ, whose efforts to stop the Pilgrim pipelines are critical to the safety of the Hudson Valley; our participation in a coalition -- #Sandy5 -- to mark the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Sandy with a city-wide march to bring pressure on NYC and NYS officials for emergency climate action. This weekend of actions will include a BCJN Bronx-wide panel on environmental and social justice at the end of October. We seek support for our ongoing education efforts promoting a rapid, just shift to a 100% renewable energy economy for New York State; and for BCJN's planning work and participation in the Bronx Community Green Fair, a major event on October 22nd organized by ourselves and a coalition of faith and community organizations to help residents of the N. Bronx take urgent collective action on climate change.

For our Green Vision Group, we need funding for: our community efforts to daylight (restore) Tibbett's Brook in the NW Bronx; our work on behalf of a local campaign to preserve Van Cortlandt Park's Class I wetlands from asphalt paving of the Putnam Nature Trail; and education efforts, in partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Society's Mannahatta Project, to inform struggles to "green" the Bronx with a historical and scientific understanding of the natural history of the borough.

Your support is invaluable, morally & financially:

Funds will be used for public events and forums, for political actions, protests, and rallies, for educational and publicity materials like flyers and brochures, and for our ongoing community film series and book group meetings. We also urgently need funds for a part-time salary for one staff person to coordinate all of our many activities, meetings, and events.

We're excited about deepening our partnerships with front line communities in the Bronx, New York State, and around the world that are being hit first and worst by climate change and the profound inequities of environmental injustice and racism. We are in this struggle for as long as it takes to create a greener, healthier, more democratic and secure world for our own and future generations. Our work is informed by love and a fierce sense of solidarity with those with whom we stand shoulder to shoulder in the struggle not just for climate justice, but all kinds of justice.

We cannot do this work without you. Please... be as generous as you can. If $10 is what you can do right now, that's a big help too. No amount of support is too large or too small!
