The World Health Org' estimates that up to 18,000 Australians are killed by preventable medical errors every year...that's not taking into account the more than 100,000 people who are impacted by other injuries/errors. This is NOT a beat up of healthcare professionals, many of whom are fantastic, but to try to CHANGE a flawed system. The money raised will be to lobby for reform and change.
1. A transparent database of critical adverse medical events in an easily accessible format so that all Australians can make informed decisions about their hospitals, surgeons and healthcare providers.
2. A ‘NO BLAME’ compensation system for victims who have sustained permanent injury from medical negligence, that doesn't demonise doctors or the victims of medical errors.
3. Health system reforms that see an efficient, timely and better public health service.
If you ask around, you will know someone who has suffered from medical negligence or medical error...
We have Worker's Comp, Motor Vehicle Insurance, Victims of Crime compensation - but the victims of medical negligence or error can only sue for damages. This is an adversarial system that is unsuitable for the vulnerable, the sick and those without resources. The average Australian citizen has 'buckley's chance' of funding the $1000's needed to prove their case and pay for medical reports and/or lawyers. VERY, very few of these cases come to court and even less are successfull. Many of the innocent victims of medical negligence crawl away, traumatised, victimised, often bullied...and some just plain DIE.
