Since the Hockeyroos Olympic team has recently been announced, our little town of Gerringong is buzzing with excitement.
Grace Stewart has been named, and at the age of 19 she is the youngest hockey representative to be heading to the Rio games in August.
Grace began playing hockey for Gerringong when she was only 5 years old.
She made her first representative team at the age of 11, when she represented NSW primary schools at the Pan Pacific games.
Grace not only excelled in Hockey during her school years, but she proved herself as an all rounder sportswomen competing at state level in swimming, touch football, athletics as well as cross country.
She was selected for the Australian all schools U/16's hockey team at the age of 15 and toured Argentina.
The following year she proved herself and took on the captain role of the same team that toured South Africa.
Upon returning from these tours she was included into the NSWIS program and dedicated her love for hockey and its commitments by travelling 3 times a week to train in Homebush for the next 2 years.
Just last year she made her debut into the National hockey league to play for the NSW Arrows.
2015 was a busy year for Grace, while completing her HSC at the same time as representing the Australian U/21 team that was touring Argentina, she was invited to join the Hockeyroos squad in Perth.
This meant for a big move away from her family as well as lifestyle changes to persue her career.
She debuted at the young age of 18 and scored her first goal within minutes of taking the field in Singapore. Grace has now played 22 games for Australia, scoring 12 goals in just 6 months.
Our commuity is so proud of our local Olympian and want her to have the support of her parents, Scott and Mandy with her- so let's help them get to Rio.
