The Cycling Photobook of Taiwan

Donation protected
Hello, and thanks you for taking the time to read this!
My name's Thomas, I'm an Italian freelance photographer and I currently live in Taiwan.

I've spent a few years on this beautiful island, only to find that so much of its natural scenery is unknown to most people.

Plenty of people come to Taiwan and only visit some of the large, most popular cities. Some tourists decide to take one step further and cycle all around the island, enjoying the scenery and travelling at a slower pace.

During the last three years I've invested a lot of my time in my blog: https://randomibis.wordpress.com/. I used it to share all the beautiful locations that it's possible to visit outside of popular tourist routes, and I've always been keen on the cycling and photography aspects of my travels.

The reason why I decided to start a GoFundMe campaign is that I'd like to bring my blog to the next level and publish a photobook. Cycling/touring guides of Taiwan are very common. I'd like to work on a book that focuses not only on travelling but also on photography from a technical and artistical point of view. How I reach a location by bicycle, what kind of equipment is required, the settings I use, the composition, the best time of the day to get there and so on. And if you're wondering about it, all images I'm using here are my own.

Even though Taiwan is not a huge country, working on a cycling photobook will take a lot of time and efforts. Being able to share my passion with people all over the world would be a dream come true for me, and if one day I could meet even just one single tourist who decided to come to Taiwan thanks to my guide then all my efforts would be well worth it.

The way in which I plan to use the money is the following:

a) I estimate that completing a book just for the region where I live (Yilan) would take me at the very least two months. That includes bicycle touring to all different locations (including 3000 meters high mountains), photography, post processing and the preparation of the book itself. It would be a full time activity, so a good part of the money would be used to cover daily expenses, accomodation and overall lack of a fixed income.

b) Photography gear. I currently own a good Canon full frame camera and I have a nice collection of lenses. That's not the best setup for cycling though, mostly due to its fairly heavy weight. Also, Taiwan has a tropical weather and is often drenched in heavy, torrential rain. Part of the budget will go into a more compact, weather sealed system (probably from the Pentax K line), as well as a weatherproof action camera that I could use to document my trips. Videos will be published on Youtube and will update everyone about my progess. For the action camera, my current #1 on the list is the Olympus TG Tracker due to the possibility of using its Gps to create and share the routes leading to all my final locations.

c) For cycling I'm pretty much set, I already have a good touring bicycle in my Giant Defy. A really small amount of money will be invested in the accessories required to carry the photography gear, installing the action camera, as well as spare tubes/tires to travel safely.

d) The book itself. It will be my first published work, so I'll need to invest some money into it as well as paying for a professional translation. English is not my mother language, so my book will have to be proofread. Also, I'd love to publish it both in English and Chinese, so that even local tourists could understand how much a "foreigner" can love and care about this country.

The first book that I'd like to complete will be dedicated to my beloved Yilan, the region where I've lived for years now. If the book will manage to be succesfull, I'll immediately start working on the same project for other regions of Taiwan as well, and I could use the money generated from the first book to support my future publications.

I think that by now you know everything about my project. I hope that trough my words you could feel how much this project means to me. As a huge:"THANK YOU" to all people who'll kindly decide to support me, I'll dedicate the last few pages of the book writing the name of each person who contributed to this campaign (unless you prefer to be anonymous, of course!).

If you find my project to be interesting and you decide to support me, all that I can say for now is simply: thanks a lot, you don't know how much this means to me. And if you think that this project is cool, please share it with your friends. Sharing it on Facebook, on your blog, on Twitter or really anywhere may help me a lot.
If you're a supplier of some of the gear that I require for my project and you wish to be an official sponsor, feel free to contact me.

Thank you for your time.
