Help us to purchase our building

£185 of £90,000 goal

Raised by 8 people in 19 months
We are a mental health charity based in Sandwell, West Midlands.  The charity was started in the 90s and  constituted in 2000 in response to a lack of cultural responsive services for people of African and Caribbean background suffering or recovering from severe and enduring mental ill health.  This group of people are the most stigmatised and have poorer life chances once they have been given a mental health diagnosis and being involved in the psychiatric system.   This has been well documented.
We are asking for help to purchase the Kuumba centre where we are based, because due to funding cuts we are unable to raise the necessary funds independently.  This has hindered our chances of purchasing the building so that we can turn it into a community facility that will benefit the community and people with mental health problems at a grass roots level.
If we managed to raise the funding to buy the building it would enable us to become independent.  What this would mean for us is that the building would be renovated to provide a much needed services for people living in one of the most socio economically poorer areas of the UK.  This would be staffed partly by volunteers who have mental health problems.  This would take away some of the pressure of having some of our funding reduced by  the local authority and give us the means to earn a much needed income and rely less on grants and funding from the statutory sector.

It has been about 5 months since my last update and in that time we have had a very low response to our go fund me campaign which is very disappointing. However Rome was not built in a day so perseverance is key to this campaign.

Mental we notice becomes a topical theme when it comes to electing a new government. Especially the high proportion of black people sectioned under the mental health act or given higher levels of medication. This for politicians is a way to appeal to a section of society in the minority.

That why charities like SACMHF exits to tackle the health inequalities experienced and as a result has impacted on their life chances.

By continuing to raise funds to purchase out building we are building a future for the organisation whereby we can use this as a community asset to benefit the wider community an as such give us an opportunity to gain an independent source of income. Community assets like these are being sold off by local government and charities like us suffer as a result.

Can I say thanks to those that have responded to our appeal at the Kuumba Centre. The appeal has attracted some funding but not as much as we had hoped. However we are still fund raising to buy the building so please keep on donating. We are eternally gratefully.
Mental health is in the news at the moment because of the serious lack of funding from government has affected the services we provide for people with mental health problems in the community.

Dear all our campaign is still continuing. The original reason for setting up the campaign still exists. We are a mental health Charity that exits to cater for the needs of people who are experience severe mental ill health and need help in the community away from big NHS facilities. We started this campaign to raise funds to help us to buy the building that we operated from so that we can generate an income to keep the charity going. We have suffered huge funding cuts and this would help us in the long term. What this would give us is the means to move forward with our plan to turn it into a conference facility to generate funds. And in the long term this will help us to become sustainable.
