Hello Bernie Supporters! Onward to Philadelphia!
I am thrilled to have been elected a Sanders delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Minnesota’s First Congressional District, and I look forward to fighting on Bernie’s behalf.
I’m a former aide to the late U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone -- who represented the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party, he liked to say -- and not since Paul have I felt this excited about a politician, this excited about a candidate’s platform, this excited to get involved and do my part and to get others to do theirs. For too long we’ve allowed the wealth to flow to the top 1 percent. Now it’s time to take it back!
Over the past year, I have worked countless hours as a volunteer on Bernie’s campaign, and within the past six weeks I have run for and been elected: district level delegate to the national convention, member of my state’s platform committee, and member of the Democratic National Committee where I will continue to push for progressive candidates and a progressive agenda: campaign finance reform, tuition-free college, universal health care, comprehensive immigration reform, social security expansion, a $15 living wage, and on and on. If ever we’re going to make headway on these issues, now is the time!
I am grateful for the opportunity to serve on these committees and for the chance to support Bernie in Philadelphia, and would appreciate any $10-$20 you can send my way to help defray convention expenses estimated to reach $3,000 -- including airfare, hotel, ground transportation, etc.
(We are required to stay with the Minnesota delegation in a hotel that costs $350/night for five nights. Yes, shocking! This is a deal apparently since our hotel is not actually located in Philadelphia but rather 90 minutes away! I’m not complaining though. I would commute to Philadelphia from Minnesota if I had to!)
So, if you can help with expenses, I would greatly appreciate it. But more than anything, I would appreciate you staying involved in the movement. Keep speaking truth to power. Keep organizing and rallying and fighting for the 99 percent. We have the numbers. Let’s show our strength!
Run for office or support others who do. Attend your local Democratic Party meetings and endorsing conventions. Run for a seat on the various committees -- Nominations, Rules, Platform, etc. This is where Party decisions are made. Be a part of the process! If you want a seat at the table, you have to show up for dinner.
Okay, enough preaching to the choir. Thanks for all you have done and continue to do. Now let’s change the world!
