Classroom/Workshop at "The Co-op"

Donation protected
Community members band together to save an historic building in the center of town, 'The Co-op.' With a small grant from USDA, the members of the Hampshire County Co-op & Heritage Market Place forge ahead with renovations to the 1930's building with the project goal of using the building for a year round Arts Market and Farmer's Market including a classroom/workshop area and an area behind the classroom/workshop for community gatherings such as: square dances, theater, job fairs, etc.

Board of Directors for 'The Co-op' are:
Dave Martin, President
Joanne Snead, Secretary
Harald Seiler, Treasurer
Carter Wagoner
David Pancake
Denise Huard
Patty Anderson

The photo shows the sales area being renovated. To this point all work has been done by volunteers including the work plans, framing and electrical upgrade.  Drywall, new gutters and the truss repairs will be contracted.

The grant will not stretch to cover the cost of materials and labor needed to frame and finish the 20' by 40' space behind the sales area that will be used as a classroom/workshop/meeting room as well as a gallery/demonstration area.  The estimate is for $15,000 to frame the room, insulate, run heat/ac, drywall, electrical as well as purchase tables, chairs and other needed furniture. The money from the GoFundMe account will be used entirely for this classroom/workshop area.

The group's goal is to have a large portion of our work completed so that we can open to the public at the WV Peach Festival in Romney, WV, August 5-7.

Our members all feel that the classroom/workshop area is the most important part of our renovation. This project offers a much needed venue for community revitalization.  Your donation will help make this possible. Thanks for your time and consideration.

The building is owned by the Fort Mill Ridge Foundation, a non profit organization who oversees the care and site developement of the Civil War Trenches west of Romney.

To quote one of our members:
West Virginia’s oldest town is rediscovered through its newest Marketplace:  The Hampshire County Co-op and Heritage Marketplace. The environs of Romney will soon be teeming with more activity.  Where? One of our senior landmarks is being repurposed to invigorate our town and county.  Taking advantage of its location just off route 50;  1 block west of the Court House and adjacent to Taggart Hall with its museum and historic d displays, as well as Romney’s oldest house and mercantile structure, the Mytinger House… this 1930’s building known to all as just the Co-op, will again become a hub of activity.   Each resident, business-owner and commuter should lend a hand and become a participant in the revitalization process.   Each business owner and current or soon-to-be entrepreneur needs to get connected and join forces to build this magnet that will draw shoppers, tourists and passers-by.   “Giving Presidents and their wives reasons to stop and stay awhile.”
