SIGHT & SOUND FOR CHARLENE
SCIENCE HAS ARRIVED TO HELP ME HELP MYSELF
If you were deaf-blind and lived with a progressive Usher's syndrome all your life, then you have the opportunity to participate in the largest ophthalmology stem cell clinical trial at the age of 53 in order to see and hear would you?!
My answer is most definitely without hesitation. The only issue at hand is to come up with the money to have the SCOTS procedure done and to cover expenses to travel to Florida with an assistant.
Dual sensory loss is a very scary place to be and at times I struggled immensely due to the unknown of what would happen and when. Back in 2005 not able to cope, I had 3 nervous breakdowns 3 consecutive years in a row. My last episode led to a month of hospitalization.
I decided then that I needed to stop fighting the disease and learn to embrace it. In 2009 I attended Helen Keller National Center in Sands Point, NY for a six month rehabilitation stay. Thankfully, I learned to be very independent.
Where I lack independence due to being on disability my finances are tight to afford the $19,600 price tag for the procedure alone, plus travel expense ( a week in FL ).
The SCOTS "Stem Cell Ophthalmology Study" has had promising and positive results on several patients with some actually driving! With your help this could easily be me pending I have the funds available before the surgery. (Scheduled for August 23rd). The surgeons take the bone marrow from the hips, separate the stem cells which is then inserted into the eyes.
I always prayed about keeping the little that I do have but never dreamed for the probability to come knocking on my door in this lifetime.
Every dollar counts with much appreciation... The monetary value will be beyond immeasurable. This could mean sight and sound for the rest of my future.
With warm gratitude,
Charlene J. Ouellet
