The lady in this picture is my sister in law, Kristy. I met her nine years ago when I married her brother. Kristy at that point stood out to me as someone who just made other people smile. She was always super goofy and loved to have a good time. Despite her uphill battle she has always been the one smiling for other people.
Kristy is the youngest of four children. She is the only girl. Both her mother and father have moved on to heaven due to heart complications.
Kristy is currently 26 years old. Shortly after we met, 18 year old Kristy found out she was expecting her first child. For several years she raised Izabelle (age 7) by herself with no other support, while putting herself through college. She later started dating long time family friend Shawn. In 2012 her father passed away, lather that year Shawn and Kristy got married (2012) and had another beautiful little girl named Aria (Age 3). Kristy and Shawn continued to pursue higher education. She had ambitions to become law enforcement. Last year in 2015, Kristy graduated with her law enforcment degree. Just before Kristy's college graduation her mother passed away and was not able to attend this. She then spent 6 months interning for her desired position.
Februrary 2016 changed things for the family. Kristy was born with a rare genetic condition called Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT). We had always known this as a dominant symptom is nose bleeds. In february she found out that the HHT had spread to her brain. They found out that due to the HHT, she had Brain Arteriovenous Malformations (AVM). Brain AVMs can be very dangerous as they will likely rupture with time causing hemeraging in the brain, stroke, paralysis. At this point Kristy was informed that she would have to undergo 3 brain surgeries to correct this to eliminate the risks of having a major episode with no warnings. The first surgery was in March 2016. This was a success. Kristy did not want to schedule the 2nd/3rd surgeries until her daughter Izabelle was formally adopted by her husband Shawn Watson. In April 2016, the estate of her mother was finally settled and each of the 4 children received a very small sum of money. For Kristy it was enough only for an adoption and the man who has been a part of Izabelle's life officially and forever became her Daddy. Kristy then felt ok scheduling the more intensive brain surgeries. They were supposed to be back to back.
Kristy went in for the first surgery. It was supposed to be a routine procedure to insert onyx and microcatheter to make it possible for the long surgery. This was the surgery that had the least amount of risk for potential negative effects, but the worst has happened. Kristy has suffered multiple strokes as a result of the onxy and micro catheder. She has developed Webers Syndrome which is middle brain strokes. She has been intubated and is not breathing on her own. She has had moments of consciousness in which she responds to questions and is able to write. Her motor functions are affected and so is her vision. Her husband is due to return to work tomorrow, but fears that the worst could happen.
My husband and I will continue helping as much as we can, but her husband is afraid that their living expenses will not be paid. He is very worried about what he must do if he should indeed return to work so that their family is cared for, or if he should be at the hospital. At the moment they do live with us, but only as of this weekend. They had bills from their appartment as well as car payment, etc. Additionally, we live 40 minutes from the hospital and driving there daily to be there for them. Shawn is worried that he will not be able to provide basic needs for his kids including food, yet is terrified to leave Kristy alone. Our whole family has been pitching in to help as we are able to do so.
Today my husband (Kristy's brother) had the not fun duty of telling their 7 year old and 3 year old that mommy won't be coming home from the hospital like planned and that she is very sick from the surgery. My husband has always been strong when faced with grief and broke down crying as he explained this to the young children.
If you are able to help please help so that Shawn can be able to be there for Kristy and not worry about the finances. If not, please pray.
Our family immediate and extended would be truly grateful for your assistance. We are all praying for a full and quick recovery for Kristy. She is very young and has 2 beautiful girls who need her home. We appreciate your support as our family goes through this challenging time.
