MBO needs a new telescope
Mount Burnett Observatory (MBO*) is located in the Dandenong Ranges, 70km from Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. The observatory is run by the Mount Burnett Astronomical Society; a volunteer-run, not for profit organisation that aims to bring astronomy to the public. We have a membership of 284 and are now the largest regional astronomical society in Victoria.
WHAT DO WE DO?
The society runs a dynamic outreach program that includes public viewing nights at the observatory, visits to schools and science week events. Over 7000 people have attended our outreach events. The observatory has a significant prescence during Science Week, (we were a co-organiser and presenter of the astronomy programme at Scienceworks in Melbourne during Science Week in 2015 and in 2016 MBO will be a lead partner in the Scienceworks programme). All of this is done purely by volunteers who are driven by a love of astronomy and a commitment to take it to the streets and fields of the Dandenong Ranges.
SO WHAT DO WE WANT TO DO?
Mount Burnett Astronomical Society needs a new telescope.
With the success of the observatory we are finding that our facilities are no longer capable of matching public demand. The original 18 inch telescope which was installed in the 1970’s was never designed for large numbers of the viewing public. It is accessed by a narrow, steep stair which restricts people with mobility issues. There is no wheelchair access. The telescope itself was not designed to be used as a viewing telescope, and to actually look through the lens can involve perching precariously at the top of a ladder. Use of the telescope is limited by the nature of the design of the scope and a lack of computerisation. A new Go-To telescope would be suitable for advanced viewing projects and allow the citizen scientists of Mount Burnett and our partner schools to once more do research on the mountain
We are installing a new, computerised dome that has ground-floor access, which would improve our ability to meet public demand, provide greater accessibility and develop our astrophotography capability. We need to buy a new 14 inch Go-To telescope to go in the dome.
We are seeking public support for the purchase of a new 14 - inch telescope for the dome.
MBO appreciates all donations, no matter how small as every cent will contribute to the purchase of the telescope. Please support us in our work to continue to bring quality science and astronomy to the people of Melbourne.
