Sue's Stem Cell Treatment

Donation protected
Hi, I'm Sue Bohlin. I am a teacher, a writer, a speaker, a calligrapher, a mentor, a student of God's Word, and a lover of people. And I am a polio survivor, which has shaped me in many ways.

One morning two years ago I discovered I couldn’t walk at all without my cane, which I had only used outside the house. Between severe hip arthritis and an ever-increasing leg weakness due to the pain and my post-polio, I’ve been going downhill FAST. As you can see, I’m now on a walker. At the rate I’m going, I’ll be in a wheelchair soon unless something changes.

Two orthopedic surgeons have said I need both hips replaced, but my physical therapist has serious concerns about my ability to get my strength and mobility back after surgery. I started out completely paralyzed in my left leg when I got polio at six months old, and I’m sliding back toward uselessness of that leg.

So I am THRILLED that I am a candidate for stem cell treatment!

It uses the patient’s own cells to regenerate and heal. The Premier Stem Cell Institute will extract my own bone marrow, spin it in a centrifuge, and then inject some stem cells directly into my hip joints. The rest are infused into the whole rest of my body through an IV. The amazing adult stem cells (AKA “More of God’s Fingerprints” in my book) regenerate tissues (hopefully, some cartilage in my hips) and heal the body.

Dr. John Peloza told me that since the steroid injections I received last year in my hips were very successful (though the effects only lasted three months), that’s a good indicator of the pain reduction I can expect from stem cell treatment, but with much longer-lasting results. At the very least, it should push back the necessity for joint replacement (or for transition to a wheelchair) by several years.

I have heard of several people who had to travel to other countries to receive stem cell treatment, but the Stem Cell Institute is right here in Dallas, plus they charge much less because the procedures are not done in a hospital. No insurance covers stem cell treatment, though.

$10,000 will cover all the expenses. But some dear friends are so thrilled by this possibility that they have pledged a matching gift of up to half of that—which means I only need $5,000!

Stem cell treatment is still cutting edge technology, so we will all find out together what effect it has on post-polio. At this point, nobody knows. I'm cautiously hopeful!

I so appreciate anything you can do to reduce my pain and possibly weakness, and help me get some of my life back!
