Support Seminar on Sign Language!

Donation protected
Hey guys! My name is Sojin and I am an independent curator based in Vancouver. I am working with sign language professionals to organize a seminar on sign language and audism*

*Audism: discrimination towards the d/Deaf. NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH AUTISM
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audism)

Project Description:

The seminar discusses sign language and Deaf Culture in depth, acknowledging sign language as a valuable cultural artifact and a powerful medium of communication. The objective of the seminar is to combat audism by embracing and celebrating cultural diversity of Deaf Culture. The event is divided into two parts:

Part1@ VIVO Media Arts Centre
Tues July 13, 4-6pm
Presentation/seminar on American Sign Language (ASL),  its grammar and history.  In this seminar, discussion about misguidance and oppression of Deaf Culture will take place as it is critical to question domination of power, identity subordination and inequality of the human rights that Deaf people experience on daily basis. By criticizing and conversing on violence that Deaf citizens face, we hope to define Deaf identity and strengthen their voice.

Part2@ VIVO Media Arts Centre
Wedn July 20. 4-6pm (REGISTRATION CLOSED)
Free public workshop on ASL. Learn how to introduce yourself, discuss leisure activities and learn about sign language culture. By the end of this class you should be able to engage in simple conversations.

There will be ASL interpretation for both events. Interpreters from the WIDHH (Western Instititue for Deaf and Hard of Hearing) will be present from 4-6pm.

Your donation will not only provide an opportunity for BC’s Deaf Community to speak about the important cultural role of sign language, but also allow artists to consider and adopt the language as a medium for their creative practice.

Please consider being a sponsor of the project and help raise the voices of the Deaf Community! In return, your name will be acknowledged in every promotional material.
