Save Sarah

Meet my cousin Sarah. At 17, her future looks bright. She is in the top 10% of her class, runs cross-country and belongs to the National Honor Society and the debate team.  She is also gay.  Like any high school kids in a relationship, Sarah and her girlfriend wanted to go to prom together.  But when they did that, Sarah’s parents, who believe that homosexuality is a sin and abnormal, sent Sarah away against her will to an East Texas Christian boarding facility for troubled teens to “pray away the gay.”

Not only does this type of “therapy” not work, mental health professionals from organizations like the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics have found it to be psychologically damaging, especially for minors.  And Sarah has been told that she must stay in this facility for a whole year.  So instead of being surrounded by friends and extended family who love and support Sarah for who she is, she’ll be isolated in a place where the fact that she is gay is treated as a sin and an illness. Instead of preparing for college and competing in the state debate tournament, she’ll be doing forced labor every day and enduring Bible-based “therapy” for her “disease.”

She is not allowed phone calls or email or any form of computer communication.  She is also not allowed visitors and cannot leave the property.   She is completely cut off from the outside world. She tried to run away, but was caught by the staff and returned to the facility.

Sarah’s extended family and close friends are trying to win her release through the legal system, but it’s not cheap.  Attorney’s fees in the first few weeks have already exceeded $20,000, and they are continuing to mount, with a full hearing set for July.  Sarah needs your help.  But this is about more than just one gay kid – if we free Sarah we can help show that it’s not okay to try to make gay teens straight by sending them away and using the threat of God against them.

Spread the word so being gay doesn’t mean losing freedom for Sarah. #savesarah.

Update 2
We have an important update. We have just been informed that Sarah has been released from the facility. We don't know the details, but we believe that this page, and the willingness of you all to share Sarah's story had a great deal to do with this. We don't yet know what this means for the legal case -- we need to consult with our attorney and, when we are able, with Sarah about how or whether to continue. In the interim, we are not requesting additional donations at this time. As we've previously stated, if the lawsuit terminates, we will use all of the money that you so generously contributed to pay accrued legal bills for our lawyer and Sarah's. If there are any funds left over, they will be placed in a trust for Sarah to help her with life"s next steps so that she can attend college and lead a normal life being who she is and loving whom she chooses.

We are understandably excited by today's developments, and hopeful for what this means for Sarah's ability to live her life as her true self. And we are hopeful that one day soon all the other LBGT teens out there who face rejection by their families and attempts to "fix" their sexuality will be accepted for who they are.

We will update this page when we know more. Thank you again for your generous contributions and kind words for Sarah. We look forward to when we are able to speak to Sarah and share with her all the incredible and inspiring words that you and others have written to her during this traumatic time.

Sincerely,

Sarah's family (extended)

Thank you to everyone who contributed and sent Sarah their well wishes and encouragement. The response to our appeal has truly been overwhelming.

Some of you have asked questions or requested more details about Sarah’s case. These questions are completely legitimate, and we understand the instinct to be skeptical of anonymous, web-based appeals for money. We try to answer at least some of your questions below.

IN RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS ABOUT VALIDATING THIS STORY:

Q: Where is the money donated going?
A. It is going to pay legal fees for the lawyers trying to get Sarah released from the Christian boarding facility that her parents placed her in. Sarah’s aunt, who brought the suit, hired Christine Andresen, a well-known family law attorney with a lot of experience litigating LGBT issues. Christine’s law firm is called CHA Law Group, PC, and its website is ChaLaw.com. Any money collected will go first toward paying Christine’s legal fees and our portion of the amicus attorney fess, which thus far have totaled approximately $20,000. Christine has generously agreed to give us a discount from her usual hourly rate, but we still expect the fees to prepare for and conduct the hearing in July to be a multiple of what’s been spent so far. If there is any money from the Go Fund Me campaign left over, it will be placed in a college fund for Sarah, since we do not expect her parents to contribute to her college costs if we are successful in having Sarah released.

Q. Where is the litigation taking place?
A. In Texas State court in a small county outside of Austin, TX. Because Sarah has a younger brother, we do not want to provide their family name or characteristics that can be used to publicly identify them and possibly draw media scrutiny or unwanted publicity.

Q. If Sarah is 17, isn’t she free to leave?
A. No. Although 17-year olds are considered adults for certain purposes in Texas, state law permits parents to force their children to stay in a residential boarding facility until their 18th birthday. Additionally, the facility is in an extremely rural area. When Sarah attempted to walk out of the facility shortly after being placed there, staff quickly apprehended her and returned her to the facility, and she was punished for her escape attempt. When close friends of Sarah drove up to the facility in an attempt to free her, local law enforcement threatened to arrest them.
