My mom, while on a family trip fell ill and had to receive immediate medical care in Nassau, Bahamas. They deemed her not safe for commercial flights and have transported her back to Canada via an ambulance airlift. The cost of the air lift as well as her medical expenses comes to an astronomical total of over $52, 000 CAD which my family cannot afford. Any and all financial help you and your family can provide would be GREATLY appreciated.
Shirley had brought three of her children on a vacation cruise to have a lasting fun memory together. Shirley was diagnosed last January with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer. Due to her terminal illness she is not eligible to purchase health insurance while travelling.
On day 2 of the cruise, we brought Shirley down to the infirmary on the ship as she had spent the past days in her cabin not feeling well and the pain had gotten too much for her to handle on her own. Once brought to the infirmary, the doctors noticed that her abdomen was extremely bloated and her catheter was blocked. They tried many different medications and treatments, but Shirley was not progressing. The ship doctors sent Shirley by ambulance the next morning to Doctors Hospital in Nassau to receive better care.
Once admitted to the Nassau hospital, the doctors effectively changed her catheter and dressings and moved her into the ICU to monitor her as her breathing and oxygen levels were extremely low. After a few nights in the ICU they moved her into the MCU as she appeared to be improving.
Shirley's breast cancer, being metastatic, has travelled to multiple different areas of her body including; her brain, her liver, her lymph nodes, her bones, her spine, and her femoral head and hip. The mets in her lymph nodes and breast have proven to be the most problematic in this scenario as they are putting pressure on her lungs and throat making it very difficult for her to breathe which is causing her short of breath rendering her unsafe for commercial flights.
